UX Lead

Our utilities client is looking for a UX Lead to join their dynamic in-house team. This is a 40-hour a week ongoing freelance role. The UX Lead is a hybrid position that will be onsite three times a week at the client's office located in Downtown Houston.

Are you a visionary UX leader passionate about creating seamless, accessible, and data-driven digital experiences at scale? As a UX Design Lead, you'll shape enterprise-wide experience strategies, influence executive decisions, and guide a team of top-tier designers, researchers, and content strategists. This is your opportunity to champion customer-first design, drive innovation, and lead a high-impact redesign initiative using Sitecore headless CMS.

UX Lead Responsibilities:

Strategic Vision, UX Strategy, and Business Alignment

  • Develop and drive end-to-end UX strategy across multiple product lines aligned with business objectives and user needs.
  • Integrate UX design, research, and content strategy into a unified vision that prioritizes user value and business impact.
  • Lead visioning sessions, roadmap planning, and prioritization frameworks to guide strategic product development.

UX Research and Insight Integration

  • Oversee the UX Research function, ensuring that qualitative and quantitative methods are used to uncover user behaviors, pain points, and opportunities.
  • Guide the team in designing, conducting, and synthesizing research studies (e.g., usability testing, surveys, field studies, A/B testing).
  • Translate user insights into actionable design recommendations and strategic direction for products.

Content Strategy and Information Architecture

  • Collaborate with content strategists to ensure clear, consistent, and user-centered messaging across products.
  • Align content with user journeys and ensure voice and tone guidelines are integrated into design systems.
  • Support scalable IA frameworks that improve navigation, task flow, and content discoverability.

Leadership, Mentorship, and Influence

  • Mentor and develop UX, Research, and Content Strategy team members, fostering a collaborative and inclusive design culture.
  • Influence cross-functional teams and executives through storytelling, data synthesis, and persuasive communication.
  • Cultivate a culture of continuous learning and design maturity across teams.

UX Metrics and Organizational Impact

  • Define and track UX KPIs tied to NPS, CSAT, task success rate, retention, and engagement metrics.
  • Communicate the ROI of UX and research investments to executives and stakeholders.
  • Drive experience improvements that contribute to product-market fit and business growth.

Cross-Functional and CMS Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Marketing leads, aligning design efforts with feature delivery and business goals.
  • Partner with implementation teams and content leads for the full-scale redesign of .com using Sitecore headless CMS.
  • Lead UX involvement in discovery, planning, and execution phases to ensure usability and scalability.

Design System and Operational Excellence

  • Guide the evolution the enterprise design system, ensuring consistency, accessibility (WCAG compliance), and scalability.
  • Champion DesignOps practices that streamline workflows, documentation, and cross-functional alignment.

Inclusive Design, Ethics, and Emerging Trends

  • Promote accessibility and inclusive design for diverse user needs and compliance standards.
  • Drive ethical design decisions, integrating data privacy, equity, and responsible innovation.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends and lead the integration of AI, automation, and smart interaction models into design thinking.

External Thought Leadership

  • Represent the client at industry events, contribute to professional communities, and mentor design talent across the organization.
  • Share best practices in UX, Research, and Content Strategy through internal forums and external publications.

Senior UX Designer Requirements:

  • Bachelor's in design, HCI, HCDE, Psychology, or related field; master's preferred.
  • 8+ years of UX/UI/UXR experience with increasing leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams, including Research and Content Strategy in large-scale enterprise environments.
  • Design & Prototyping: Figma, Adobe XD
  • Research: Maze, Optimal Workshop, dscout, UserTesting, Qualtrics
  • Content Strategy & CMS: Sitecore, Contentful, GatherContent, Miro
  • Collaboration: Miro, Jira, Confluence, FigJam
  • Methods: Human-centered design, design thinking, usability testing, card sorting, information architecture, journey mapping, A/B testing, service design

In this position, you may have access to client or customer systems, confidential and/or proprietary information or data. This position is onsite and requires you to work closely with other individuals in a collaborative team environment.
