The Marin County Free Library (MCFL) is a special taxing district that operates ten branch libraries in Marin under the authority of the Board of Supervisors. It provides public library services to the residents of the unincorporated areas of the County and the cities of Corte Madera, Fairfax and Novato.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Webstars is a paid youth internship program in Marin County. Founded in 1999 at the Marin City Library, the program now provides hands-on training and work experience. We are recruiting for these locations: South Novato, and Marin City. 
  
Through Webstars, teen interns build skills they need to pursue careers in technology, libraries, and STEM education. Webstars learn job skills, facilitation, process-based learning, maker tools, and program design. While onsite, they may serve as technology tutors at the library or facilitate and design maker and STEM education activities at our Makerspaces and library branches under the guidance and direction of library staff. Webstar, The Shop, South Novato Library

  • Learn how to assist patrons of all ages with a variety of craft projects including sewing, painting, woodworking, and more.
  • Learn to assist users with tools and materials
  • Maintain a clean space 
  • Help service tools and keep track of materials and general inventory

Webstar, The Lab, Marin City Library

  • Learn how to assist with technology help for patrons of all ages
  • Learn how to demonstrate virtual reality programs
  • Learn to use digital media, including coding, laser cutting, and 3-D printing

ABOUT YOU

Our Highly Qualified Candidate: 

  • Maintains High School enrollment for the duration of the internship
  • Has reliable transportation to their assigned work location
  • Is responsible, mature and motivated to learn
  • Is interested in working directly with the public 

Minimum Qualifications: 
 Applicants must be enrolled in a high school academic or vocational curriculum or be within one year of having graduated.
 
 Applicants under 18 years of age must secure a work permit from their high school district before being employed.

Please note, this position is NOT a summer internship. Students who are hired are expected to work during the school year a minimum of four hours a week.  

Testing and Eligible List: Depending on the number of qualified applications received, the examination may consist of a highly qualified review, application screening, online assessment, written examination, oral examination, performance examination, or any combination to determine which candidates' names will be placed on the eligible list.  The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any future vacancies for open, fixed-term, full-time or part-time positions which may occur while the list remains active. 

Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
