Union Settlement is an East Harlem based nonprofit organization founded in 1895. For 128 years, Union Settlement has provided critical and innovative programming to children, youth, families, and older adults. As a pioneer of the settlement house movement, Union Settlement continues to meet the needs of the ever-changing East Harlem community through its core programs. Today, Union Settlement provides services through 33 program sites in approximately 28 locations. Union Settlement's current programmatic portfolio includes 8 core program areas: Early Childhood Education, Youth Development & Opportunity (including after school programs), Family Services (including the Family Enrichment Center and the Family Childcare Network), the East Harlem Community Partnership, Adult Education, Comprehensive Mental & Emotional Healthcare (Mental Health Services), Aging, Health & Wellness Services (Older Adult Centers), and Economic Development. Union Settlement serves more than 10,000 individuals and nearly 1,000 businesses every year.

Position: Meals on Wheels Associate

Department: Older Adult Services

Reports to: Meals on Wheels Director

Hours: Part-Time M-F 8:30am - 3:00pm

Salary: $20.00 per hour

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Location: On-site

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Meals on Wheels (MOW) Director the MOW Associate will primarily be responsible for the administrative coordination of the Meals on Wheels (MOW) program, including client support, routing for meal delivery, and staff support.

Responsibilities:

  • Complete client intake in STARS Peer Place, assignment to Peer Place route, client communication and support.
  • Maintain a list of active substitute drivers and deliverers who can be called to fill absences.
  • Collaborate with kitchen staff on the packing of homebound cold packs and hot meals, using appropriate temperature maintenance devices.
  • Plan delivery routes, adding and deleting clients when necessary. Adjust routes periodically to maintain necessary balance in size.
  • Receive and record communications from Case Management to initiate service for new clients. Ensure that meal delivery begins, suspends, restarts or terminates in a timely manner, and report all implementation to Case Management.
  • Collect and record client contributions and maintain accessible records regarding these transactions.
  • Adhere to the Missing Client Protocol and prepare daily Missing Client Report memo (e-mail) to Case Management.
  • Reconcile and enter HDML units into database.
  • Keep records of each vehicle including registration, licensing and permits information, and vehicle maintenance and fuel records.

Additional responsibilities as needed

  • Deliver meals to homebound clients.
  • Use appropriate heating and cooling devices when packing meals.
  • Package meals into hot and cold containers each day for delivery.
  • Maintain accurate daily route sheet.
  • Follow agency protocol and procedure to report any difficulty with meal delivery (i.e. client not home, not answering door) or changes in client status (i.e. slurred speech, deterioration in client appearance, confusion).
  • Follow agency protocol and procedure to report any observable issues at the clients' homes (visible tampering with door or locks).
  • Follow agency protocol and procedure to report any information the client provides regarding planned absences (hospital stays, vacations, etc.) that would prevent the client from being home to receive his or her meal.
  • Clean and sanitize all delivery bags, boxes, holding containers and truck compartments daily.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the MOW Director.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid license to operate a vehicle in New York State.
  • At minimum three years' experience operating a vehicle.
  • No convictions for driving while intoxicated in the prior 2 years.
  • No more than one moving violation within the prior 2 years.
  • English speaking and writing proficiency; Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (30+ pounds), as well as walk to deliver meals daily.
  • Good organizational ability, time management, and interpersonal skills (ability to connect with clients and work with a team).
  • Knowledge of and desire to work with aging populations
