Multicultural Academic Counselor

Position Summary

The Multicultural Academic Counselor provides comprehensive advising, support and referrals to CMAE students including recipients of UO scholarships and providing services to all students including first-generation, rural, low-income, and transfer students. This position provides wrap-around support by assisting students with academic planning, guidance in setting goals, exploring majors, engaging in campus community, career exploration and post-graduation planning.

This position works alongside other CMAE counselors and campus partners to promote collaborate educational and professional opportunities for students, including advising students in Academic Residential Communities (ARCs), and coordinating proactive outreach to support the needs of students.

This position will advise Diversity Excellence Scholars, and any students seeking support and advisement. Duties include supporting the mission and objectives of CMAE as a central support program on campus and serving as a campus resource for diverse students; assisting students with academic planning, retention, and post-graduation planning; collaborating with faculty and staff to support historically underrepresented students; and working with other CMAE counselors and campus academic advisors to promote collaborative educational and professional development opportunities for all students

Essential Functions:

Academic Counseling, Student Support and Advocacy

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Work collaboratively in an advising team to provide wrap-around support through academic counseling and support to an assigned caseload as well as regularly welcoming new students who are seeking academic advising, mentoring, and campus support.
  • Assist students in creating a 4 yr. academic plan with a focus on timely graduation and post-graduate planning.
  • Assist current students with scholarship applications, graduate school selection, and admissions process, career opportunities, research opportunities, etc.
  • Provide guidance to students in academic jeopardy including assessing student academic needs for appropriate referrals to resolve barriers to success (financial, personal, health, learning skills) and monitor academic success plans/contracts.
  • Assist students in understanding academic deadlines, course enrollments, GPA projections and other related information that allows students to make informed choices on majors, minors and time to degree.

Programming and Assessment

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Work collaboratively with other CMAE staff to evaluate services.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to provide activities, workshops, and programs designed for student retention and degree completion.
  • Collaborate to create and maintain academic success programs and resources to help students build skillsets to deal with obstacles or hardships that they may experience in higher education.

Service to the Department and Division

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve on committees, attend meetings, and complete special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Two years of professional work experience in advising, counseling, career counseling, teaching mentoring, or related work in an environment that included one-on-one interaction with others for the purpose of accurately and effectively conveying information and/or providing guidance.

Professional Competencies

  • A broad working knowledge of student development principles.
  • Understanding of issues facing diverse students (e.g. students from under-served populations, including low-socioeconomic, first- generation, and non-traditional backgrounds).
  • Strong organizational and written communication skills.
  • High-level organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail oriented and time sensitive environment.
  • Ability to recognize situations that warrant initiative and move forward without hesitation; ability to anticipate next steps and execute independently to resolve issues, problems, or situations.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (or similar) and ability to produce professional correspondence, documents, data reports, and presentations.
  • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies, including faculty, administrators and staff at all levels.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times including understanding of FERPA and other policies, procedures, or regulations that guide interactions with students and colleagues.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel Services, Counseling, Academic Administration, Psychology, or other related fields.
  • Experience working with students, or educational agencies to promote student success and retention and effect meaningful change (e.g. work at an HBCU, rural and urban high school success program, or Boys and Girls Club)
  • Three years of experience providing academic advising, personal counseling, or teaching in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of university settings and/or resources to assist individuals in meeting mental/physical, health, financial, academic, and other basic needs.
