Position Summary

The MSP Airport Police Department is hiring Part-Time Police Officers!

The Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport Police Department (MSP APD), a division of the Metropolitan Airports Commissions (MAC), serves the entire airport campus. The department is comprised of approximately 200 employees which includes full-time officers, part-time officers assigned to terminal checkpoints, community service officers, and civilian administrative positions along with our own 911 Emergency Communications Center. This makes MSP APD one of the largest police departments in the state.

We are seeking qualified, customer-oriented individuals to join the Airport Police Department as a Part-Time Police Officer.  Ideal candidates include officers who have retired within the last three years or licensed law enforcement professionals from other agencies who are interested in continuing their public service at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport.  If you are looking for part-time employment, have the law enforcement background needed, and would enjoy providing high quality customer service, this may be the position for you!

** This position is not meant as an entry into the law enforcement profession and we are unable to consider applications from candidates who are looking for part-time work in addition to current police employment. **
Primary duties of a part-time police officer include supporting the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) screening function at security checkpoints. There is a high level of public interaction in this position. Other duties include responding to customer service requests, calls, and emergency situations. Investigating suspicious circumstances or situations and writing reports. Part-time officers enforce state statutes, federal regulations, and local ordinances.

Work schedules generally equate to 8-12 days worked per month.
Day shift work hours are 0445-1245 with 8-hour shifts, 4 days on, 8 days off.
Afternoon shift work hours are 1245-2045 with 8-hour shifts, 4 days on, 8 days off.

Uniforms, training, and equipment are provided.

Successful candidates must pass a comprehensive background check and be able to obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) airport badge

Additional Information:
As part of the collective bargaining agreement, LELS Local #302 (Police Officers), part-time officers participate in the Post-Employment Health Care Savings Plan (HCSP) in which 10 percent of their gross pay is deducted from each paycheck and deposited into the HCSP. This position is not eligible for medical or dental insurance or vacation accrual.  

This position is covered by the Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) Police & Fire (P&F) retirement.  If you are not receiving a PERA pension, you will contribute to the P&F fund.  If you are currently receiving a PERA pension or plan to in near future, PERA requires a complete and continuous separation from all public employment for 30 days. There can be no written or verbal agreement prior to termination to provide any kind of services, paid or unpaid, to a PERA participating public employer.

This position is not eligible to contribute to Social Security but does contribute towards Medicare.

  • Assist federal checkpoint screening staff with security
  • Respond to customer service requests
  • Respond to calls and investigates crimes, disturbances, emergencies, and other incidents.
  • Complete written reports and forms along with collecting and processing evidence to maintain chain of custody in accordance with standard operating procedures and directives.
  • Enforce laws and ordinances
  • Safety and security of critical infrastructure to deter terrorism.

Minimum Requirements

  • Licensed or eligible to be licensed by the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board (by time of appointment)
  • Possess a valid state-issued driver's license with no restrictions
  • No felony convictions as defined by Minnesota State Statutes
  • Medically, physically, and psychologically fit to perform the job duties
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills 
  • Ability to effectively work with the public
  • Ability to present evidence and offer credible testimony as required in court


Desirables

  • Five years or more of recent experience as a full-time, licensed police officer in a small to mid-size police department
  • Ability to fluently communicate in a second language
  • Previous experience working with culturally and economically diverse populations and communities
