Job Summary:

Under the direction of the optometrist, performs a variety of routine and specialized technical procedures, in the examination and treatment of eye disorders, and the fitting and dispensing of contact lenses. Makes members/patients and their needs a primary focus of ones actions; develops and sustains productive member/patient relationships. Actively seeks information to understand member/patient circumstances, problems, expectations and needs. Builds rapport and cooperative relationship with members/patients. Considers how actions or plans will affect members; responds quickly to meet member/patient needs and resolve problems.



Essential Responsibilities:

  • This position, knows and complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies and procedures. Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice in every interaction with patients, colleagues, providers, and leadership. Ensures patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to but not limited to medications, procedures, infection prevention, fall prevention, including consistent use of two patient identifiers and procedural time outs. Reports safety hazards, accidents and incidents, and unsafe working conditions promptly.

  • Completes order forms and orders contact lenses consistent with prescription, according to standard procedures; receives contact lenses and checks the specifications of the lenses for accuracy, using the lensometer, radiuscope, and other measuring devices. After conferring with optometrist, returns lenses that are not within acceptable tolerances, performs all modifications to contact lenses as directed by the optometrist, such as polishing and adjusting lenses (including power and curvature). Instructs the patient on the proper procedure for the wear and care of daily and extended wear contact lenses (rigid) and soft). Responsible for daily cash accounting and inventory control.

  • Prepares examination and treatment rooms for use by eye care providers by cleaning, stocking and arranging supplies and equipment which requires bending, reaching and moderate lifting of up to approximately 45 pounds throughout the day.

  • Reviews appointment schedule to determine patient visits order; greets and escorts patients to examination or treatment room in a courteous manner, instructs or assists patient in preparation for scheduled procedures.

  • Performs basic and routine vision screenings examinations as directed, recording data on standard format for interpretation by the eye care provider. This may include pertinent medical and ocular history, visual acuity, stereopsis, color testing, tonometry and the measurement of blood pressure.

  • Performs other technical skills as directed by an eye care provider which may include keratometry, refractometry, automated perimetry and ocular imaging.

  • Administers eye medications as ordered by the Ophthalmologists and Optometrists, and demonstrates knowledge of ocular pharmacy to assigned provider annually, or as requested.

  • Cleans and maintains ophthalmic equipment appropriately.

  • Performs clerical and reception duties as directed. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • In addition to defined technical requirements, accountable for consistently demonstrating service behaviors and principles defined by the Kaiser Permanente Service Quality Credo, the KP Mission as well as specific departmental/organizational initiatives. Also accountable for consistently demonstrating the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors necessary to provide superior and culturally sensitive service to each other, to our members, and to purchasers, contracted providers and vendors.


Basic Qualifications: Experience

  • Six (6) months or more of satisfactory full time experience as a Contact lens technician. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
