RELOCATION ASSISTANCE: Relocation assistance may be availableCLEARANCE TYPE: PolygraphTRAVEL: Yes, 10% of the Time Description At Northrop Grumman, our employees have incredible opportunities to work on revolutionary systems that impact people's lives around the world today, and for generations to come. Our pioneering and inventive spirit has enabled us to be at the forefront of many technological advancements in our nation's history - from the first flight across the Atlantic Ocean, to stealth bombers, to landing on the moon. We look for people who have bold new ideas, courage and a pioneering spirit to join forces to invent the future, and have fun along the way. Our culture thrives on intellectual curiosity, cognitive diversity and bringing your whole self to work - and we have an insatiable drive to do what others think is impossible. Our employees are not only part of history, they're making history. The Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) Microelectronics and Device Applications (MDA) group pushes the boundaries of innovation, redefines the leading edge of exotic new technologies, and drives advances in the sciences. One of our most challenging new fields is Transformational Computing, which combines the unique properties of superconductivity and quantum mechanics to develop radical new energy-efficient computing systems. Our team is chartered with providing the skills to transform computing beyond Moore's Law, advancing development of computer architectures, processing/memory subsystems, and large-scale high-performance computing systems. You'll work in an R&D environment alongside a broad array of scientists and engineers to make these processing solutions a reality and deliver remarkable new advantages to the warfighter.
We are seeking a computational physicist/scientist to fill the role of a high-performance computing computational physicist. This candidate will use and develop algorithms, codes, and analytical tools to numerically solve complex mathematical models of physical phenomena related to superconductivity while interacting with experimental colleagues to solve complex problems.
The ideal candidate has knowledge of state-of-the-art scientific computing methods, experience in joint experimental-theory collaborations, and experience with models of superconductivity. Strong candidates demonstrate scientific curiosity and are excited to participate in the evolution of new technologies and can effectively communicate their own knowledge to others.
This position requires 100% work on site at our Linthicum, MD location and/or our Annapolis Junction, MD location.
Your responsibilities:

• Implement algorithms and code for large-scale simulation of mathematical models in a high-performance computing (HPC) environment.
• Incorporate input from the scientific computing team on code development, testing, and validation of simulation tools, as well as creation of model pipelines or workflows.
• Communicate iteratively and regularly with the simulation team, physicists, engineers, and organizational leadership to determine development requirements and report on progress.
• Develop physics-based mathematical models and/or improve upon existing models for the accurate description of superconductivity, electromagnetism, and quantum-mechanical systems.
• Document methods and results in technical papers and presentations; document code for users and other developers.
What you need to be successful in the role:

• Innovative problem-solving skills.
• Motivation to learn new technologies and technical skills necessary to advance them.
• Ability to collaborate in a small group setting as well as work independently.
• Interdisciplinary communication skills.
This position can be filled at the Principal level OR the Sr. Principal level.  Qualifications for both are listed below:
Basic Qualifications for a Principal Computational Physicist:

• Masters' degree in STEM related field and currently enrolled in a PhD program with a completion date prior to start with 1 year of relevant technical experience OR PhD in STEM related field with 1 year of relevant technical experience.
• Proficiency with physics-based simulations and simulation output visualizations including python-based tools and libraries.
• Knowledge of algorithms, methods, software libraries, and other tools commonly used in scientific computation.
• Ability to productively communicate with peers in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS/SCI) with polygraph clearance per business requirements. US Citizenship is a requirement of this.
Basic Qualifications for a Sr. Principal Computational Physicist:

• PhD in STEM related field with 4+ years of relevant technical experience.
• Proficiency with physics-based simulations and simulation output visualizations including python-based tools and libraries.
• Knowledge of algorithms, methods, software libraries, and other tools commonly used in scientific computation.
• Experience and ability in leading peers in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS/SCI) with polygraph clearance per business requirements. US Citizenship is a requirement of this.
Preferred Qualifications for both Principal and Sr. Principal Computational Physicist:

• Background in computational physics, scientific computation, or high-performance computing.
• Experience implementing numerical methods for numerically solving differential equations.
• Experience developing physics-based mathematical models and validating models against experimental data.
• Experience working in a high-performance computing environment.
• Experience using version control software and familiarity with version control best practices.
• Knowledge of multiscale modeling approaches and/or multi-physics simulations.
• Knowledge of superconducting physics, quantum mechanics, or condensed matter physics.
• Active TS/SCI with polygraph clearance.
