





Job Summary:
Integrity Verification Engineer is responsible for supporting the Southern Company Gas AGLC and CGC Integrity Verification Programs ongoing MAOP Reconfirmation effort. This support with include detailed research and prudent evaluation of asset records and physical attributes based on codes, standards, and practices established by PHMSA, the Company, and Industry. The role requires significant coordination with TIMP, Engineering Design, Con Ops and GIS & Asset Data Services as well as review of intense documentation and data. This role will also require close coordination with outside consultants and contractors including project management, project controls, engineering and construction. This position can potentially have direct employee reports and/or contractor reports.
Job Responsibilities & Accountabilities
- Functional Expertise:
- Develop technical procedures, projects, and engineering designs, by interacting with staff and performing quality reviews to ensure designs meet PHMSA, State, and Company standards
- Perform analysis in support of MAOP Reconfirmation method selection including review of hydrotest vs replace, downrate or retirement
- Implementation support of regulator station data including operating diagram, health scores, SFL’s, as-found drawings into existing systems including AR and GIS.
- Familiarity with GIS transmission and core modules as well as Laserfiche. Job requires analytical analysis utilizing a combination of GIS and other record sources.
- Familiarity with review of construction documentation include contractor as-builts, engineering as-builts, weld log, material log, enhanced GIS data, MTR’s and hydrotest documentation.
- Work to establish and organize the detailed historical records pertaining to gas system integrity
- Track projects from concept through completion with responsibility for schedule and budget variances
- Follow established Asset Development Processes (ADP) to ensure meaningful structure exists to meet departmental and company objectives
- Business Acumen:
- Continued development of permanent record and evaluation standards
- Design engineering solutions that provide the most efficient and cost-effective long-term solutions for ongoing issues with the gas distribution system
- Follow manager’s guidance for developing roles and responsibilities for department and contractors
- Ensure that applicable requirements and standards for reporting are followed
- Assure compliance with Company policies & procedures
- Identify and properly manage project risk
- Engagement:
- Collaborate with Construction Management, Engineering Design, GIS and Asset Data Services, System Integrity and System Planning leaders to produce effective solutions and designs
- Develop project and program metrics on a monthly basis
- Support projects through complete lifecycle
- Schedule and develop regular department and project meetings
- Driving Results:
- Provide scheduling and budgeting support to ensure that budgeted projects are constructed within budget year
- Develop project execution plans
- Support departmental O&M goals
- Participate in development and review of contractor bids including scorecard development
- Establish quality tracking and scoring for key partner contracts
Qualifications
Related Work Experience:
- Experience in engineering, construction, or operations in gas distribution or related energy field
- Position is in the Engineer Job Family and will be filled at grade level 3, 4, 5 or 6 based on current grade level and related work experience
Grade Level Requirements
LEVEL 3
Required
- BA/BS in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil or General)
- 1-2 years of progressive Engineering experience
Preferred:
- Strong engineering and construction knowledge with natural gas distribution systems, gas engineering principles and theories
- In-depth understanding of DOT Part 192 pipeline safety regulations
- Ability to use project management tools and methods (e.g., earned value analysis, critical path scheduling, project administration, establishing project teams)
- Ability to communicate with all levels in the organization
- Ability to influence and persuade in decision making.
- MS Office - advanced proficiency
- Southern Company Gas GIS familiarity
LEVEL 4:
Education and Experience:
Required:
- BA/BS in Engineering (Mechanical, General or Civil)
- 2 -3 years of progressive Engineering experience
Preferred:
- Strong engineering and construction knowledge with natural gas distribution systems, gas engineering principles and theories
- In-depth understanding of DOT Part 192 pipeline safety regulations
- Ability to use project management tools and methods (e.g., earned value analysis, critical path scheduling, project administration, establishing project teams)
- Ability to communicate with all levels in the organization
- Ability to influence and persuade in decision making.
- MS Office - advanced proficiency
- Southern Company Gas GIS familiarity
LEVEL 5:
Education and Experience:
Required:
- BA/BS in Engineering (Mechanical, General or Civil)
- 5 years of progressive engineering experience in gas standards and materials, project engineering or construction management of natural gas, pipeline facilities or other applicable industries.
- 2 + years familiarity and experience with Gas Safety regulations or utility pipeline construction practices
Preferred
- 5-7 years of experience operations, construction, project management, engineering, quality, safety
- 1-2 years supervisory or project leader experience
- Strong engineering and construction knowledge with natural gas distribution systems, gas engineering principles and theories
- In-depth understanding of DOT Part 192 pipeline safety regulations
- Ability to use project management tools and methods (e.g., earned value analysis, critical path scheduling, project administration, establishing project teams)
- Ability to communicate with all levels in the organization
- Ability to influence and persuade in decision making.
- MS Office - advanced proficiency
- Southern Company Gas GIS familiarity
LEVEL 6:
Education and Experience:
Required:
- BA/BS in Engineering (Mechanical, General or Civil)
- 7 years of progressive engineering experience in gas standards and materials, project engineering or construction management of natural gas, pipeline facilities or other applicable industries.
- 5 + years familiarity and experience with Gas Safety regulations or utility pipeline construction practices
- Engineer in Training (E.I.T.)
Preferred
- 7 years of experience operations, construction, project management, engineering, quality, safety
- 1-2 years supervisory or project leader experience
- Professional Engineer (PE)
- Strong engineering and construction knowledge with natural gas distribution systems, gas engineering principles and theories
- In-depth understanding of DOT Part 192 pipeline safety regulations
- Ability to use project management tools and methods (e.g., earned value analysis, critical path scheduling, project administration, establishing project teams)
- Ability to communicate with all levels in the organization
- Ability to influence and persuade in decision making.
- MS Office - advanced proficiency
