About The Role: The Senior Wastewater Sustainability Specialist (Water Quality Planner/Project Manager III) will focus primarily on the incorporation of green infrastructure and sustainable building practices into the capital improvement projects of King County's Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD). It will help ensure that capital projects meet and report out on requirements outlined in King County's Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP), Green Building Ordinance and Equity and Social Justice Strategic Plan. This role will develop trainings, resources, and tools that educate WTD's capital project teams and consultants on sustainability topics and allow them to incorporate it across the capital project process.
Along with green infrastructure technical expertise and capital project management skills, the successful candidate will have a strong commitment and passion for sustainable design and mitigating the impacts climate change. Candidates will be self-motivated and detail oriented. They will have a strong ability to communicate complicated subject matter and work effectively on variety of capital project and program teams.This position performs work remotely and onsite.
About The Team:This position will be supervised by the Climate, Energy and Sustainability Supervisor. The Climate, Energy and Sustainability work group is part of the Resource Recovery Unit in WTD's Operations and Maintenance Section. The Resource Recovery Unit strives to bring valuable resources, technology, and sound business practices together to deliver products and programs that inspire our customers to be part of an environmentally sustainable future-today. It is responsible for ensuring safe, environmentally friendly products are made from an urban renewable waste stream including, Loop biosolids soil amendment, recycled water, and renewable energy, as well as managing programs including sustainability, energy, technology assessment, and nutrient management.
The Climate, Energy and Sustainability work group includes the Sustainability Program. This team is focused on development and implementation of King County sustainability policies, including the King County Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP) and Green Building Ordinance (GBO). Work performed by the team includes efforts to increase green building, use of low-embodied carbon construction materials, green O&M efforts, and construction and demolition waste diversion in WTD operations and capital projects.

What You Will Be Doing:
- Serve as a green building and sustainable design subject matter expert to WTD's capital program and projects.
- Support capital programs and projects' integration of green building practices by providing education to capital project and construction staff, and developing tools and resources, including standard specifications, guidance documents and contract language.
- Assist project teams with green building project certifications, including the internal WTD Sustainable Infrastructure Scorecard, LEED, Envision, Living Building Challenge and Salmon-Safe.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners to further green building outcomes and to support relevant efforts, such as Waste Diversion, Green Stormwater Infrastructure, renewable energy, and ESJ.
- Manage the quarterly and annual green reporting processes for WTD.
- Support WTD's Sustainability Program and other duties as assigned.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Qualifications You Bring:
- In-depth knowledge and experience working with sustainable development and green building concepts.
- Experience working in capital improvement planning, design, and construction processes and experience working on capital improvement projects and/or programs
- Proficient in working with green building rating systems and other sustainable development/"green building" frameworks such as the WTD Sustainable Infrastructure Scorecard, Living Building Challenge, Envision, LEED, etc.
- Communication skills (oral and written); skill in communicating technical and other information effectively to a diverse audience.
- Knowledge of wastewater systems and operations, and experience working on capital conveyance, treatment and/or resource recovery projects.

Required Licenses:- Valid Washington State Driver's License
- Experience reviewing construction design drawings and specifications.
- Sustainability certifications, such as Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) and LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP).
- Experience implementing sustainable infrastructure through the WTD Sustainable Infrastructure Scorecard.
- Experience working with or supporting large organizations and governmental agencies.
Supplemental Information
Working Conditions:
- Remote and Onsite Work Details: Employees in this role work remotely from a home location, with occasional onsite reporting requirements. The frequency of onsite work is determined by business needs and may be adjusted accordingly. Onsite reporting locations may be at various King County worksites throughout the WTD service area including the collaboration space at King Street Center (201 S. Jackson St, Seattle, WA 98104) and treatment plant facilities. This work arrangement promotes work-life-balance and reduces carbon footprint under the department's vision of Green Where We Work.
- Requirement: Employees must reside in Washington State and be within a reasonable distance to King County worksites to meet onsite reporting requirements.
- Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is exempt from the overtime provision of the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) and is not overtime eligible.
- Union Representation: This position is represented by The Technical Employees' Association (TEA).
