Position: Agriculture Technology Instructor

Report to: Dean of Career and Technical Education

General Job Summary:

The instructor is responsible for teaching a full-time assignment of classes on the Emmetsburg Campus as defined by the College. This may include teaching high school students enrolled in college courses. Must evaluate and report student performance and progress in assigned courses in accordance with College and division policies and procedures. Courses taught by the instructor will vary depending on education and experience.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities

  1. Effectively organize, teach, and evaluate student performance and progress in assigned course offerings in accordance with established syllabi. Assignments may include various delivery formats, methods, work schedules, and locations.
  2. Evaluate, report, and record student performance and progress according to College and division guidelines.
  3. Maintain current course syllabi and provide student guides for all courses taught.
  4. Design and implement teaching methodologies for classroom and laboratory activities which develop the competencies needed for individuals employed in agricultural operations.

Frequent

  1. Maintain established office hours.
  2. Assist the departmental academic advisor to ensure student progress and make referrals, when deemed necessary, to other College personnel, such as the Executive Dean, Counselors, Financial Aid, etc. for more specialized information and assistance.
  3. Attend and serve on assigned and voluntary program and College committees.
  4. Assist in the development of new courses and revisions of existing courses in discipline area to ensure continued program growth and development.
  5. Arrange lab sites for student practical experiences and monitor progress.
  6. Coordinate specific tracks of the Agricultural Technology program and involve students in the management of the various enterprises.
  7. Assist and collaborate with other Agriculture instructors and the Marketing and Admission Offices in recruiting and retaining students.
  8. Assist with the development and maintenance of partnerships with industry personnel.

Occasional

1. Regularly engage in professional development activities and keep current with developing trends and ideas in profession.

2. Assist in the process of requesting and maintaining instructional equipment and supplies for classrooms/laboratories use.

3. Assist the supervisor in the program budget management process.

  1. Assist in the maintenance and enhancement of communication within the College and community.
  2. Encourage and foster student participation in professional organizations, College activities, and community activities.
  3. Articulate the curriculum with the Farm Manager to align with farm tasks and assist with farm tasks as needed.
  4. Assist with completing required faculty reports as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Represent the College in the most positive manner with prospective, former, and current students, staff, and the community. Possess a commitment to a student-centered environment.

2. Ability to organize and present various curriculum concepts to a wide range of students with varying backgrounds and abilities and adjust teaching techniques accordingly.

3. Present oneself in a classroom setting in a manner that is acceptable and consistent with program and College guidelines, policies, and practices

4. Assume responsibility, deal effectively with problems and exercise independent judgment when making decisions.

5. Establish and maintain good working relationships with students, staff, other agriculture personnel, administrators, and other contacts.

6. Read, understand and express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written communications.

7. Possess strong human relations skills and the ability to effectively relate to diverse personalities.

8. Be a creative, energetic and self-motivated individual with demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.

9. Possess a working knowledge of personal computers, software, and educational media equipment.

10. Demonstrated capacity to plan, organize, implement and evaluate the management of the specific tracks in the farm enterprise.

11. Ability to articulate the teaching of classroom information with implementation in the agriculture area.

Special Demands:

Position involves sitting or standing most of the time in an office or classroom/laboratory setting. Constant (67-100%) reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, talking hearing, repetitive motions and viewing various types of close visual work. Frequent (34-66%) stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling and carrying. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and 10 pounds of force frequently. May be required to travel between sites utilizing personal vehicle. Must have a valid driver's license, good driving record and provide proof of insurance.

Employment with Iowa Lakes Community College is dependent upon successful passage of a criminal background check. Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.

Minimum Qualifications: Three years (6,000 hours) of recent, relevant experience in the field of instruction to be taught, or 3,000 hours of recent, relevant experience and possess an associate or bachelor's degree in the field of instruction. Working knowledge of livestock production or agribusiness is desired. Prior experience in an educational setting is preferred. Three years of experience in an agriculture-related occupation and bachelor's degree preferred. Preference given for teaching experience and a master's degree.

Salary: Commensurate with education and related experience for a 209-day contract.
