Merchants Insurance Group is a leading Property and Casualty Insurer in the Northeast and is looking for an experienced Vice President, Human Resources to join our team in our Corporate Headquarters located in Buffalo, New York. Successful candidate must reside within 60 miles of Corporate Headquarters.
The Vice President, Human Resources is a member of the Sr. Officer Team, and is responsible for providing leadership in developing and executing human resources strategy in support of the overall business plan and strategic direction of Merchants Insurance Group specifically in the areas of succession planning, talent management, employee relations, governmental compliance, organization and performance management, training/development, compensation and benefits.

Merchants offers its colleagues a Hybrid work schedule. The Hybrid work schedule requires 8 days per month in the office, with the option to work the remaining days at home or in the office. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provide a competitive, cost-effective compensation program that enhances recruitment and retention. Monitor programs for effectiveness, cost containment and employee satisfaction.
- Administer cash compensation program (salaries and incentive compensation) including market analysis of positions, internal equity analysis, and determination of hiring salary in consultation with hiring supervisor.
- Oversee administration of benefits to include negotiation of health and welfare plan contracts.
- Oversee administration of Merchants Employee Accumulation Plan (MERCAP). Participates in MERCAP quarterly meetings with recordkeeper and investment vendor regarding management and administration of MERCAP Plan (fiduciary responsibility).
- Establish and measure the effectiveness of recruiting and placement practices and procedures.
- Develop and implement an employee recognition program. Assist management in improving the effectiveness of employee recognition.
- Provide development programs to support short and long-term organizational needs and succession planning.
- Develop human resource policies that provide for a high-performance environment characterized by positive leadership and strong team orientation.
- Maintain a Human Resources Information System to ensure that appropriate information and analysis capabilities are available to support managers' needs.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or related field.
- A minimum of 10 years of Human Resources leadership experience across all Human Resource disciplines required.
- Master's degree, SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP strongly preferred.
- Prior management experience with the ability to mentor and develop a staff of human resource professionals.
- Demonstrates a broad knowledge in all areas of Human Resources.
- Strong knowledge and background in developing strategies for the human capital needs of the organization, fringe benefit and compensation, performance management/leadership development and succession planning.
- Comprehensive understanding of the regulatory, legislative, economic and labor challenges facing the insurance industry, with the ability to develop creative and effective initiatives to address these challenges.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to flex their personal style to build trust and open communication.
- Ability to resolve conflict through persuasive and effective communication and consensus building. Able to work collaboratively within large and small groups, as well as one on one to achieve desired results.
- Ability to champion mission and values and build commitment to organizational strategy.
- Ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously to include resource allocation and acquisition, scheduling, managing budgets, coaching and training.
Merchants Insurance Group Pay information:
Merchants Insurance Group offers a competitive pay scale. The actual compensation will be determined based upon experience and other factors permitted by law. The initial pay range for this position is $190,000 - $250,000.
