The Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner is an Other Personnel Services (OPS) position with the Florida Department of Health (DOH) in Okeechobee County. The incumbent is responsible for providing specialized public health nursing care with the focus on preventative care, family planning and communicable diseases. This includes health promotion and disease prevention as well as the management of clients with acute and chronic health issues. The incumbent is expected to independently perform assigned duties in a professional and highly competent manner to ensure clinical excellence and maximum program outcomes. This position is classified as a sensitive position. Incumbent handles protected health information on a need to know basis following Department of Health, HIPAA and Information Security and privacy policy. Employee abides by State/Federal laws governing health information. Responsible to maintain confidentiality, security, privacy and integrity of protected health information. TB testing and certain immunizations may be required.



Licensure as a Registered Nurse with ARNP certification in accordance with Florida Statute 464. A Florida Driver’s license and reliable transportation are required. American Heart Association certification in CPR required within 90 days of hire. Incumbent must have a minimum of 3 years of recent clinical nursing experience. This position requires a security background check and/or drug screening and participation in direct deposit. Emergency duty: Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency or as needed. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural. Employees may be expected to report to a Special Needs Shelter located outside of the county if Okeechobee County moves their Special Needs Shelter to a regional shelter.



  • Evaluates and manages patients in the primary care setting in accordance with current ARNP professional practice standards, evidence based standards and medical treatment guidelines and in consultation with supervising physician when indicated
  • Documents all observations and actions accurately and in accordance with program guidelines, including prescribed timelines
  • Organizes the collection of data, ensuring the integrity of the data and using the data in a structured manner to establish benchmarks
  • Directs and coordinates the patient care and clinic activities of nursing and support staff as required
  • Reviews medical histories and evaluates patient complaints and physical findings
  • Orders diagnostic laboratory tests for evaluation and management of patients. Interprets and evaluates laboratory results
  • Provides preventative health care services including annual or periodic comprehensive physical examination utilizing various techniques such as observation, palpation, percussion and auscultation
  • Evaluates and initiates or modifies the treatment plan of common medical conditions in accordance with the scope of practice
  • Provides referrals for physician or specialty care when indicated
  • Provides information and education to the patients and/or families upon a diagnosis, including a plan of care
  • Provides excellent customer service, phone etiquette and complaint management as defined by the Okeechobee County Health Department Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintains appropriate, accurate, and up-to-date records of work performed and services provided. Participates in educational, professional and community activities to enhance personal development that will result in improvement in the delivery of service.
  • Attends selected training workshops and in-service programs, team and staff meetings, and training programs.
  • Works cooperatively with others, keeps others informed of necessary and information, and works together as opposed to working separately. Facilitates the operation of a team of which he/she is a part and fosters teamwork across the work units.
  • Encourages open communication and coordination between all members of the health care team. Communicates clearly and listens effectively; deals effectively with conflict, and avoids negative gossip.
  • Maintains the highest standards of professional conduct and ensures confidentiality at all times. Shares information only when the recipient’s right to access is clearly established and the sharing of such information is clearly in the best interest of the client.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Ability to utilize basic office equipment such as copier and fax machine. Skill in use of computers and Microsoft Office programs such as Outlook, Word, and Excel
