The position will work as a part of an integrated team that has responsibility for ES&H oversight activities and facility management tasks associated with work control and facility operations in support of science and engineering activities. Additionally, this position will provide operational support to EESD staff to maintain compliance with all applicable Federal and State laws, DOE Orders, and ORNL policies and procedures regarding safety andenvironmental protection. This position is located in the Energy and Environmental SciencesOperations Support Group and will support the four R&D divisions in this directorate.


Major Duties/Responsibilities

- Serve as a Division work control point-of-contact (POC) for research safety summaries (RSS). In so doing, coordinates the RSS reviews to ensure sufficient peer and SME review and to ensure all RSSs are approved and authorized within the proper timeframe.

- Facilitate completion of the operational activities deemed necessary through the work control process or as requested by researchers to enable research objectives in a manner that ensures the safe and compliant execution of the research mission.

- Serving as a Facilities Operations Manager for select EESD facilities to ensure the facility is maintained within FUA guidelines, facility work orders are submitted to support research objectives, space is efficiently and effectively used, access control is maintained, and emergency preparedness requirements are met.


Other responsibilities could include:

- Serving as the Environmental Protection Officer (EPO) to ensure environmental compliance and complete all applicable environmental assessments, assisting with Hazardous Materials Management Information system (HMMIS) oversight, and other similar needs.

- Participating in self-assessments associated with the EESD Directorate

- Reviewing procurement activities for operational requirements.

- Participating in the review and development of division or directorate level procedures and guidelines as needed.

- Continually seeking ways to increase operational efficiencies in support of the research mission and champion initiatives to do so.


Qualifications Required

A Bachelor’s degree in physical science or operational discipline (e.g. environmental management, industrial hygiene, engineering), or equivalent combination of education or experience is required for this position.  Two or more years’ experience in an engineering discipline, ES&H, environmental protection, or waste management activities is required.  


Excellent interpersonal skills are required.


Qualifications Preferred:

Master’s degree or higher preferred.  Professional certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) are preferred.  Experience in the DOE system and ORNL systems such as the Research Hazard Analysis and Control System, SAMS, the Facility Service Center, and the Hazardous Material Management Information System.  A working knowledge or experience in chemical, electrical, mechanical, waste and/or environmental regulations, industrial hygiene or occupational safety.
