About City Year

City Year was founded in 1988 on the belief that young people can change the world. City Year is an education focused, nonprofit organization that unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service aimed at keeping students in school and on track to graduation. At City Year’s 29 urban locations across the United States and two international affiliates, teams of trained young people called AmeriCorps members serve full-time in schools during the academic year as tutors, mentors and role models. By focusing on attendance, behavior and course performance, which identify students who are at risk of not graduating on time, City Year AmeriCorps members are uniquely positioned to help students and schools succeed.

What You’ll Do

As a City Year AmeriCorps member, your service will focus on helping students get and/or remain on-track to graduate by providing academic support, delivering behavior and attendance coaching and encouraging student engagement to promote a positive school climate. You will be assigned to a diverse team of 8-15 young adults. Beginning each day before the first school bell rings and staying until the last child leaves the after-school program, you’ll serve students, schools and communities in a variety of ways.

Skills You’ll Gain

During your year of service, you will gain invaluable experience that will strengthen your resume and develop your professional skill set. As one of the top employers in leadership development, we provide intensive training and skill-building that will prepare you for a job in any sector. Some of our AmeriCorps members move on to pursue successful careers in fields such as business, medicine, finance and social work after developing these skills:

By working in diverse teams of 8-15 young adults for the duration of the year, you'll learn to collaborate as a team to help students and schools succeed as well as learn how to value diverse perspectives and resolve conflicts in constructive ways.

By working in under-resourced schools and with students who are at-risk of falling behind their peers academically, you’ll learn how to think critically, solve problems and make informed, ethical decisions to help students reach their full potential.

By interacting with students, teachers, school administrators, parents, community members and other AmeriCorps Members, you’ll learn how to clearly and effectively articulate your thoughts and ideas orally and in writing, as well as how to tailor them to each specific audience.
