Co-Op Insurance & Risk Management
The Vertex Co-Op Program offers students the opportunity to learn about the pharmaceutical industry from a hands-on perspective. You will be working closely with and learning from some of the brightest people in the industry. Co-op Program: 6 Month Commitment (January - June 2020), Full Time, 40 Hours/Week

We have research and development sites and offices around the world. Our business is focused on developing and commercializing therapies for the treatment of cystic fibrosis, or CF, and advancing our research and development programs in other diseases. Our marketed products are ORKAMBI (lumacaftor in combination with ivacaftor), KALYDECO (ivacaftor) and SYMDEKO (tezacaftor in combination with ivacaftor).

ABOUT CYSTIC FIBROSIS:
CF is a genetic disease with patients totaling 75,000 people in North America, Europe and Australia. CF is caused by a defective protein that results from mutations in the CFTR gene, which encodes the CFTR chloride channel Defects in CFTR function cause CF patients to produce abnormally thick sticky mucus that obstructs the airways, intestine and ducts of the pancreas. Median age of death remains in the mid-20s. On average, CF patients spend 2 hours a day or more receiving treatment and are hospitalized 1 - 2 times per year for pulmonary exacerbations.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

In this role, you will be supporting the Associate Director of Insurance & Risk Management and Senior Insurance Analyst in the implementation of the corporation's property, casualty and cyber risk management programs. He/she will work on real projects and a variety of real-world tasks that will test and grow your business skills. You'll be privy and exposed to cutting edge science, complex internal customer challenges, Senior Executives and other leaders throughout the organization and various risk management-oriented projects. The Risk Management coop will be:
  • Responsible for preparation and maintenance of underwriting data
  • Generates departmental statistical analysis
  • Collects and manages current and historical exposure information and prepares annual underwriting submissions on a timely basis for all risk financing/insurance programs.
  • Assists in the evaluation of risk financing alternatives, adequacy of limits.
  • Assists with the insurance renewal process
  • Prepares insurance coverage summaries.
  • Arranges for timely payment of costs associated with the cost of risk; keeps accurate records of insurance expenses
  • Assists in the preparation of annual insurance and risk management budget
  • Assists with insurance due diligence reviews for new entities globally
  • Perform Insurance/Financial market due diligence

Qualification:

  • Outstanding analytical capabilities and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Aptitude to manage competing priorities and meet expected deadlines
  • Advanced MS Office skills, including intermediate Excel and PowerPoint
  • Self-motivated
  • Ability to interact with employees at all levels of the organization
