The Department of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Communication at Lawrence
Technological University seeks to hire an Assistant Professor of Writing Studies to direct the
Horldt Family Writing Center and develop a robust research agenda in writing studies. The
Horldt Writing Center was established in 2018 to support student writers across campus through
tutoring, workshops, and writing labs. Since its founding, the Horldt Writing Center has shown
consistent and substantial growth, contributing significantly to the culture of writing on campus.
We are seeking a colleague committed to writing center administration who is eager to shape its
future through leadership, research, and program development. This position offers a unique
opportunity to expand the centers reach, develop new initiatives, and implement innovative
approaches to writing pedagogy and student support. The new hire will collaborate with faculty
across disciplines to provide holistic, inclusive, and integrated writing support across general
education, writing across the curriculum, and writing in the disciplines. Additionally, this role
presents an exciting opportunity to design and launch post-graduate certificates in the teaching
of writing, expanding professional development pathways for educators and strengthening the
universitys commitment to writing pedagogy. We welcome applicants eager to build a dynamic

A Ph.D. in composition, rhetoric, communication, or a related field at time of appointment is
required. Prior experience directing or co-directing a writing center is highly desirable, as is
experience with first-year-writing administration, interdisciplinary research and/or digital media
studies. The Horldt Writing Center Director will teach three courses per academic year. In
addition to first-year and second-year composition and communication courses, the successful
candidate will be qualified to teach and further develop an advanced, interdisciplinary writing
and technical communication course for LTU PhD candidates across STEM disciplines. Recent
curricular updates also include courses in interdisciplinary collaboration and communicating with
public audiences. We are seeking a candidate eager to contribute to the continued growth of
writing studies at LTU by developing upper-level electives that not only align with their research
interests, but also complement and support existing departmental courses in literary studies,
media communication, and related fields. The remainder of the contract will be fulfilled in writing
center direction/tutoring, research, and departmental service. This is a 9-month, tenure-track
position, with additional opportunities for research support and summer teaching.
As an interdisciplinary department, we value diverse research perspectives and encourage
collaboration across fields. Our faculty engage in a wide range of research areas, including
environmental humanities, disability studies, global health policy, digital storytelling, media
ecologies, etc. Additionally, as LTU is primarily a STEM institution, many of our faculty
investigate the relationship between humanities, social sciences, and technology, conducting
research in emerging technocultures, metaphor processing, and human-technology interaction.
