Job Description
This role will focus on the monthly financial close process and subsequent reporting of results for Southern Company Gas and its business units. The individual assigned to this role will engage stakeholders supporting the close process, coordinating the receipt of information from various internal and external sources for use in the preparation of monthly journal entries and resolving any discrepancies in the data. Additionally, on a monthly basis, the individual in this role will review financial statements and ensure results and related variance explanations are delivered to management timely, accurately, and in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and complete account reconciliations. The individual in this role will provide internal and external auditors with information required to perform annual and quarterly audits, prepare information for data requests, reports and schedules for regulatory filings, and prepare quarterly and year-end financial schedules required for external reporting. Research and reporting on significant accounting issues, along with involvement in projects and analysis regarding process improvements, technical accounting matters, and system upgrades may be required on an as needed basis.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
•BA/BS degree in Accounting or Finance or related field required
•Intermediate knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
•Demonstrated problem-solving abilities, including the ability to critically think and present new or creative solutions
•Common ERP (e.g., Oracle) and reporting knowledge/abilities
•Skilled in using Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
•Strong organizational skills
•Strong account reconciliation skills
•Team player and with the ability to work independently
•Ability to work in an organized, detailed manner under tight deadlines
Preferred:
•Natural gas or similar regulated industry experience
•Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Participates in the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process.
•Performs monthly analytical reviews of specific business units, financial statement lines, and account reconciliations.
•Prepares journal entries, including those for moderately complex transactions; determines and makes appropriate adjustments.
•Performs moderately complex general ledger account reconciliations; analyzes and researching outstanding items/issues.
•Coordinates the receipt of information from various internal and external sources for use in the preparation of monthly journal entries.
•Generates and/or reviews standard and non-standard reports; analyzes data; tests for reasonableness.
•Prepares and/or reviews data requests, reports and schedules for regulatory agencies (state regulators, FERC, etc.).
•Participates in special projects as requested.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
•Infrequent Traveler (0-5% travel): The incumbent may be required to travel on a very limited basis. Trips may require air travel and/or overnight stay away from home for one or more nights.
•The incumbent works in an office environment 4 days a week. This is subject to change at any time.
