Position Overview

The Staff Accountant is a key member of our Finance team, responsible for day-to-day accounting operations that ensure accuracy, compliance, and timely financial reporting. This role will support 9th Way by managing AP/AR, performing reconciliations, preparing journal entries, coordinating payroll, and collaborating with project finance and operations teams.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Accounts Payable & Receivable: Process vendor invoices, expense reports, and vendor payments; generate customer invoices, track receivables, and follow up on overdue balances.
  • Reconciliations: Perform monthly bank, credit card, and intercompany reconciliations; investigate and resolve discrepancies promptly.
  • Journal Entries & Month-End Close: Prepare and record routine and adjusting journal entries (accruals, deferrals, prepaid expense amortization); support month-end and year-end close activities.
  • Payroll Coordination: Partner with HR and payroll provider to gather timesheets, verify hours, and ensure accurate, timely payroll runs; reconcile payroll liabilities and benefits.
  • Financial Reporting & Analysis: Assist with preparation of monthly financial reports; provide variance analysis on key line items and support ad-hoc analyses as needed.
  • System Administration: Support Unanet time-and-expense administration, including project setup, rate updates, and user troubleshooting.
  • Process Improvement & Controls: Document and maintain standard operating procedures; recommend and implement process enhancements to improve efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Project Finance Analysts and project managers to ensure costs are properly coded, budgets are adhered to, and financial data supports informed decision-making.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Experience in lieu of degree will be considered.
  • 2–4 years of accounting experience, preferably within a government contracting (GovCon) environment.
  • Proficiency with general ledger systems and ERP tools (Unanet experience strongly preferred).
  • Solid understanding of GAAP, AP/AR, reconciliations, and payroll processes.
  • Advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, basic macros).
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with ability to collaborate across departments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) and Cost Accounting Standards (CAS).
  • Professional certification such as CPA, CMA, or progress toward one.
  • Experience with Paylocity

Salary Range$70,000—$75,000 USD
