About the Team
At Workday, our Performance and Capacity Tools team is the heartbeat of innovation in data analytics. We're a collective force, advancing the understanding of our customer's usage and performance with ingenuity and collaborative spirit. Our journey has been remarkable, with accolades including patents and leading to data driven decisions saving the company millions of dollars. We're excited to continue this journey and invite you to be a part of our success!About the Role
Workday systems generate massive amounts of data, and our internal analytics platforms empower teams across the company to make informed, data-driven decisions at scale. As a Senior Software Development Engineer within our Performance Tools Platform team, you'll be responsible for continuously improving the technology behind our data analytics stack. In this role, you'll work with a combination of open-source frameworks and internally developed tools, iterating on feature requests from users while scaling the underlying infrastructure as Workday grows. Along the way you'll collaborate closely with data engineers, product managers, and other cross-functional partners, helping to maintain an excellent user experience across all stakeholders.
What You'll Do
Continuously improve our ETL pipelines, which extract data from petabase-scale sources, transform using SQL models defined by our users, and load the results into partitioned storage locations optimized for both compression and query speed
Design and develop user interfaces which simplify the creation of new SQL models in our pipeline, democratizing the ability to extend our datasets for additional use cases
Enhance our development environments using the VSCode Extension API
Expand upon existing data tests, CI/CD checks, access controls, and user/developer documentation, to continue scaling our tools as robust products in production
Technologies You'll Use
Programming Languages: Typescript, Python
Cloud Platforms: AWS, GCP
Data Stack: dbt, Trino, Apache Airflow, Lightdash
CI/CD Tools: Jenkins, GitHub Actions
Database: MySQL, PostgresSQL
Open Table Formats: Hive, Delta Lake, Iceberg
About You
You are comfortable working up and down the software stack, refining a web UI/UX based on wireframes one day and then optimizing query speed and data partitioning for providing faster API responses the next. You enjoy the challenge of solving hard technical problems, learning about new technologies and frameworks, and take pride in delivering a great experience to the users of your software products. If you are a full stack software developer that enjoys moving fast, while also knowing how to efficiently incorporate and optimize huge datasets in a production environment, this sounds like the job for you!

Proficiency in Python and data libraries, such as pandas and pyarrow
Experience with full-stack development in TypeScript, including UI/UX and API layer
Strong foundation in React core concepts and web frameworks (Vite, NextJS, etc)
Experience deploying to and maintaining services on AWS infrastructure (EKS, S3, Secrets Manager, RDS, Lambda, IAM, VPC, etc.)
Extensive background using VSCode + GitHub as a development environment
Solid understanding of SQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and ORMs/ODMs
Experience with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, TeamCity)
Commitment to security best practices and testing frameworks
Other Qualifications:
dbt and large-scale ETL pipeline orchestration in Airflow
Open table formats for partitioned parquet files, e.g. Hive, Delta Lake, and Iceberg
Kubernetes and setting up EKS clusters
VSCode extension development
AWS Marketplace packaging and deployment
UI/UX wireframing
Developing customer-facing UIs or configuration portals
Infrastructure as code (Terraform, Cloudformation, AWS SAM)
Contributing to and/or maintaining open source projects on GitHub

Our Approach to Flexible Work
With Flex Work, we're combining the best of both worlds: in-person time and remote. Our approach enables our teams to deepen connections, maintain a strong community, and do their best work. We know that flexibility can take shape in many ways, so rather than a number of required days in-office each week, we simply spend at least half (50%) of our time each quarter in the office or in the field with our customers, prospects, and partners (depending on role). This means you'll have the freedom to create a flexible schedule that caters to your business, team, and personal needs, while being intentional to make the most of time spent together. Those in our remote "home office" roles also have the opportunity to come together in our offices for important moments that matter.
Pursuant to applicable Fair Chance law, Workday will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
Workday is an Equal Opportunity Employer including individuals with disabilities and protected veterans.
