Responsibilities*

This individual will provide pre-award and post-award grant support to faculty and trainees as a member of the research administration team in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the Kresge Hearing Research Institute.

Pre-award responsibilities include assisting faculty and trainees in the development, preparation, and timely submission of grant and contract proposals to various sponsors including NIH, DOD, NSF, foundations and industry as well as internal sponsors. 

  • Review and adhere to proposal submission guidelines
  • Navigate through various on-line proposal submission systems
  • Develop complex budgets and budget justifications
  • Prepare all administrative components of proposal submission packages
  • Ensure that all proposal and support materials meet sponsor, Medical School and University guidelines and deadlines
  • Prepare and process Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) agreements
  • Coordinate with other collaborating institutions, departments, schools, Medical School Office of Research and U-M Office of Research and Sponsored Projects to ensure timely submission to sponsors
  • PAF submission via eResearch
  • Maintain documents for proposals
  • Prepare all types of Unfunded Agreements (UFAs) in eResearch
  • Prepare information for just-in-time requests
  • Manage and meet multiple, overlapping deadlines
  • Stay abreast of new regulations and changing requirements

Post-award responsibilities include assisting faculty with progress reports, establishing subcontracts to other institutions, and assisting faculty with post award change requests including rebudgeting and extensions. 

  • Create and/or provide information for progress reports, subcontracts, renewals and close-out activities
  • Investigate and resolve project issues
  • Prepare responses to inquiries

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  •  3 - 5 years of grant and contract experience
  • Successful candidate must be motivated with a positive attitude and strong commitment to exceptional customer service
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, complete tasks in a timely manner, and work under pressure of multiple deadlines
  • Problem solving skills and exceptional organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to maintain confidential information
  • Strong computer skills are required, including proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe PDFs

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience preparing NIH and DOD proposals, contracts, foundation grants, as well as NIH training grant or other large grant proposals is strongly preferred
  • Post-award experience is desired
  • Familiarity and experience with University administrative and business tools such as M-Pathways, M-Reports, Business Objects and eResearch
  • Knowledge of University and various UM school/college policies and processes

Work Locations

This position is eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
