ABOUT THE POSITION
The Peck School, a coed, K-8, independent school in Morristown, NJ, seeks a part-time instrumental teacher to provide small-group instruction and lead our middle school band and orchestra, with the potential for full-time employment to support music programs and provide general support to the Upper School. We will consider candidates for this role on either a part-time or full-time basis. The terms of employment will be determined in discussion with the successful candidate, taking into account their qualifications, interest, and the needs of the school. This position is an excellent opportunity for a dynamic individual who enjoys working with middle school students and collaborating with an experienced and dedicated music department.

The instrumental music teacher will cultivate students' musicality and instrumental proficiency through instruction. Students with varying levels of experience opt into Peck's instrumental program, establishing a foundation in the basic principles and skills of instrumental musicianship. Through ensemble and concert performances, they build experience with sight-reading, technique, and performance skills.


OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Instrumental Instruction:
    • Teach small group lessons, Monday-Friday from 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM.
    • Conduct band or orchestra rehearsal on Fridays from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
      • This role presents a unique opportunity, adaptable to either a part-time or full-time commitment. We are seeking the best fit, and the scope of responsibilities and hours will be tailored to leverage the successful candidate's qualifications and interest in growing the program.
  • Instrumental Performances:
    • Direct one culminating performance, typically held in the evening in May.
    • Select pieces are performed at an All-School Assembly.
    • Direct two ensemble performances, typically held during the school day in December and May.
      • Other performance opportunities are available.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  • Prior experience as a music director or teacher.
  • A broad musical experience commensurate with the role.
  • A degree or training in instrumental music education or music is preferred.

  • Content Knowledge: A passionate advocate for music education, with a proven track record of fostering musical growth and appreciation in middle school children. Possesses comprehensive knowledge of musical concepts, history, and performance, with practical proficiency on key instruments. Capable of designing innovative curriculum and leading successful student performances, ensuring all students achieve their musical potential.
  • Classroom Management: Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment where all students feel encouraged to participate and develop their musical skills, utilizing effective classroom management strategies.
  • Communication Skills: Use excellent oral and written communication skills to maintain open communication channels with peers, administrators, faculty, students, and parents. Have the ability to work with students in a supportive and productive manner.
  • Collaboration Skills: Consistent, positive collaboration with a team of talented faculty and supportive administrators. Excellent time management skills and an understanding of how timeliness and responsibility affect the whole.
  • Cultural Awareness: Demonstrate the ability and desire to understand, appreciate, and interact with people from other cultures or belief systems. Dedication to supporting students’ academic, social, and emotional well-being.

The Peck School uses a banded salary schedule for faculty that is based on years of experience and informed by benchmark data. With this in mind, a full-time faculty member's salary may range from $65,000 to $98,000+.
