The Intensive Comprehensive Peace Officer Education and Training (ICPOET) Program requires no prior law enforcement experience. The program is designed to recruit candidates looking to transition into the field of law enforcement. Earn while you learn!
- Earn pay and benefits while attending an approved full-time professional peace officer education program in Alexandria, MN or Brooklyn Park, MN.
- Must have a two-year or four-year regionally accreditedcollege degree in any field of study. No prior law enforcement training or experience is required.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or eligible to work in the United States under federal requirements. Please note: We are unable to sponsor employment visas.
- No felony convictions and meet all minimum selection standards per State of Minnesota Administrative Rules.
- Upon completion of the education program (approximately 22 weeks), trainees must attain POST licensure before promoting to a full time sworn police officer position with the Airport Police Department.
Successful candidate will be hired as a Police Trainee. This is a full-time position with a starting wage of $27.00 per hour and includes eligibility for insurance and pension benefits. As a Police Trainee, individuals will be paid to attend 40 hours a week of college coursework and training for approximately 22 weeks and then take the licensing exam for police officers. Schooling will be completed at Hennepin Technical College in Brooklyn Park, MN or Alexandria Technical and Community College in Alexandria, MN. In addition to earning a wage, all course fees and equipment are provided and paid for by the Metropolitan Airports Commission.
Upon graduation and successful completion of the licensing exam, the trainee will be promoted to a probationary sworn police officer and begin their career in law enforcement just like any other new officer.
Selection Process
After interviews, background checks, and various pre-employment evaluations, successful selected candidates will be given a job offer and will enroll in the ICPOET Program.
Anticipated timeline:- November 2024: Interviews
- December 2024/January 2025: Background investigations for top candidate(s)
- January 2025: Medical exam, physical ability testing, drug screen, and psychological exam
- February/March 2025: Candidates hired. Classes begin at Alexandria Tech (February) or Hennepin Tech (March)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Attend and actively participate in the identified education and skills program.
- Maintain passing grades and complete all course work associated with the program within the designated timeframe.
- Maintain appropriate physical conditioning to ensure successful completion of the skills training component.
- Upon completion of training program, successfully attain POST licensure eligibility.
- Conditional employment offers will be extended to police trainees for the period of time required to complete the aforementioned accelerated training/skills program.
- Successful completion of the program will result in a change in employment status to probationary police officer.
Position Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- An Associates (2-year) or Bachelor's (4-year) degree from a regionally accredited institution in any discipline as of December 31, 2024.
- U.S. Citizenship or eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
- No felony convictions as defined by Minnesota State Statutes.
- A valid driver's license, or ability to obtain by time of hire.
- Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills.
- Medically, physically, and psychologically fit to perform the job duties.
- Must NOT have completed a MN Skills program or taken the MN POST or reciprocity exam.
- Previous community volunteer experience.
- One or more years of experience in customer service with direct contact in dealing with the public.
- Ability to communicate effectively in a second language.
- Experience in team or group activities.
- Previous experience working with culturally and/or economically diverse populations and communities.
