Stone Ridge is seeking a part-time (20%) Upper School AP African American Studies Teacher to begin in August 2025.
Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, a member of the international Network of Sacred Heart Schools, is a Catholic, independent college preparatory school for girls, Grades 1-12, with a co-educational Early Childhood Program, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten in Bethesda, Maryland. The Upper School History Teacher is responsible for teaching history or social sciences in alignment with the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Education.
The Upper School Advanced Placement African American Studies Teacher:
- possesses strong knowledge of United States history, historiography, and facility for advanced humanities research writing and instruction.
- will teach one section of Advanced Placement African American Studies. AP African American Studies includes four major sections as defined by the College Board curriculum: Origins of the African Diaspora, Freedom, Enslavement and Resistance, The Practice of Freedom, and Movements and Debates.
- will collaborate closely with colleagues in the History department and throughout the Upper School.
- create and update plans for content, quality, and continuity of curriculum
- actively collaborates with Learning Strategists, Librarians, Educational Technologists, and the counseling staff to develop strategies to support all students.
- attends faculty and employee meetings as they are able and maintains good communication with families about student progress through regular progress reports and responses to parents’ inquiries.
Requirements and Qualifications
- a track record of successful teaching, a capacity for working with a range of learning abilities, and experience integrating appropriate educational technologies into her/his teaching.
- familiarity with current emphases on writing instruction, research, and source citation methodology (specific knowledge of digital media production a plus), and Understanding by Design.
- a demonstrated desire to innovate, collaborate, strong writing and communication skills, a capacity for organization and follow-through, creativity, and flexibility.
Compensation includes a stipend of $10,000 for teaching one section of this class.
