Summary:

The Monitoring Technician/Unit Secretary is responsible for the on-going surveillance of patient cardiac monitors and providing RNs and/or clinicians with immediate notification of any changes in cardiac rhythms. Reviews patient information to determine normal heart rhythm pattern, current pattern and prior variances. Works cooperatively as part of a team and under the supervision of a RN/LPN. Also performs the duties and responsibilities of a Unit Secretary as directed, providing secretarial support and care for patients and families. Communicates with nursing teammates, provider office staff, and/or other entities facilities regarding patient information, while carrying out assigned receptionist and secretarial duties.


Responsibilities:
1. Continually monitors patients on telemetry by interpreting and recording all EKG rhythms.
a. Provides direct patient care by performing patient preparation for monitoring.
b. As appropriate, monitors O2 sats and blood pressure.
c. Understands parameters indicating when to alert the supervising nurse.
d. Provides and accurately processes telemetry monitor records and other documents.
e. Ensures all patient care equipment is in safe working order prior to use. Reports any issues to management and removes malfunctioning equipment from service.
2. Assists in providing a quality patient care experience which may include but is not limited to the following:
a. Receives, greets and directs patients and visitors professionally.
b. Answer telephone and call bell promptly and in accordance with behavioral expectations.
3. Provides assistance and customer service to patients, visitors, physicians and teammates.
a. Strives to develop rapport and trust with patient and visitors.
b. Adheres to behavior expectations and utilizes Carolina Care techniques.
c. Provides blameless apology and works toward resolution of patient/visitor concerns.
4. Completes all required documentation accurately and thoroughly according to unit specific standards.
a. May obtain, verify or update patient information as required.
b. Ensures files, documents, schedules, records and logs are current and organized.
5. Promotes effective communication between patients, teammates, providers, and visitors.
a. Immediately reports abnormal vital signs and changes in the patient’s condition to the primary nurse or charge nurse.
b. Communicates pertinent patient information to other teammates during handoff or sooner if needed.
c. Communicates patient or family questions or concerns in a timely manner.
d. May schedule appointments for tests, follow up visits, etc. as directed.
e. May collaborate with office staff/teammates and other external entities when needed
6. Ensures teamwork by demonstrating cooperative, constructive, and problem solving interactions.
a. Performs unit specific tasks to support efficient and high-quality operations within the unit or department.
b. Accepts delegated tasks and assignments that are within their scope of practice
c. Collaborates with other units such as environmental services, transport, facilities, laboratory services, dining, etc. as needed.
d. Seeks help when needed and provides help to others when available.
7. Ensures a safe, clean, and orderly environment for patients and staff.
a. Utilizes proper body mechanics when turning/repositioning; transferring; assisting with ambulation; range of motion exercises; and using lifts, beds, stretchers, and wheelchairs
b. Follows proper infection control techniques which include items such as handwashing, isolation techniques, and standard precautions.
8. Responds appropriately and promptly in emergency situations.
a. Recognizes signs and symptoms of distress and immediately notifies appropriate personnel
b. Obtains needed supplies/equipment in a timely manner
c. Participates in CPR or other needed emergency care within their scope of practice.
9. Procures supplies and equipment in accordance with departmental needs.
10. If utilized to sit with patients, they will be required to complete Patient Safety Attendant training, maintain BLS certification and respiratory fit testing.

Other information:

Education


• Successful completion of Basic EKG training with a minimum passing score of 85%.

• High School Diploma or equivalent required, any higher education from an accredited college will supersede this requirement.

Licensure/Certification


• EKG Monitoring Certification preferred.


• Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support.



Experience


• Prior experience in a health care setting preferred.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


• Ability to interpret and understand EKGs and arrhythmias.


• Demonstrated proficiency in the use of monitoring equipment.


• Ability to maintain competency in non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP) and pulse oximetry (SpO2) as appropriate.


• Attention to detail.


• Ability to set priorities and organize many functions at the same time for an entire unit.


• Flexibility and calmness required in order to perform a variety of functions in a setting which may be stressful or change unexpectedly due to a patient's condition.


• Effective interpersonal skills to collaborate with teammates and relate to patients with varying degrees of illness.


• Ability to speak, read, write, and communicate effectively.


• Able to learn new software rapidly. Experience with EMR/Epic preferred.



Valid NC Driver’s License: No


If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
