Job Summary

The Manager of Administrative Operations reports to the Chief Department Administrator of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery with functional responsibility to the Department Chair. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at U-M is dedicated to leading advances in musculoskeletal health for all, through excellence and innovative patient care, scientific discovery, and dedicated teaching. Our clinical operations at University Hospital (UH), Children's and Women's Hospital (C&W), and ambulatory care locations are focused on continuously improving the quality of patient care and optimizing the patient care experience. Our broad research portfolio spans the spectrum of basic science, clinical research, and health services outcomes research. In terms of service, our faculty hold significant leadership roles in the medical school, hospitals, health systems, and national organizations. Responsibilities*

  • Work with Orthopaedic Surgery leadership and faculty to design, develop, and manage administrative operations of the department. Manage the faculty affairs, human resource functions, and administrative procedures.
  • Direct the development, implementation, and evaluation of new processes.
  • Oversee faculty affairs including promotions, credentialing, annual evaluations, and new hires.
  • Oversee staff HR functions including payroll reconciliation, equity review, and job reclassifications.
  • Manage and maintain faculty effort reporting.
  • Department PAR approver and authorized signer for badges and computer accesses.
  • Manage faculty offer letters, MOU's, and position justification forms.
  • Manage staff and faculty appointment changes for the department.
  • Work with the Chair and Chief Department Administrator regarding human resource functions
  • Supervise medical campus administrative specialists/assistants.
  • Approve/coordinate vacation and coverage.
  • Sign timesheets
  • Delegate job responsibilities
  • Annual evaluations
  • Coordinate cross-training of staff positions.
  • Provide mentorship and learning opportunities for staff.
  • Collaborate with the CDA and clinical operations partners on department budgets.
  • Assure compliance with University, Hospital, Medical School, and Department and outside agencies' rules and guidelines.
  • Represent the department on administrative matters related to faculty affairs and staff human resources.
  • Additional responsibilities/duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • A bachelor's degree (in business, health services administration, or another related field or learning related to the duties of the position) and considerable professional experience with reasonable prior management, supervisory or team leader experience is normally required.
  • Experience in management including the ability to lead meetings, set agendas, prioritize, resolve conflicts, and manage a project plan and timeline.
  • A history of progressively responsible professional experience in a relevant field.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and work coordination skills are necessary, including the ability to prioritize complex work assignments and maintain a positive, flexible, responsive service-oriented attitude with excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the capacity to build collegial relationships across the Department and Michigan Medicine and the ability to work with a wide range of people who represent our diverse and multicultural society.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
