DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Incumbents in this job class perform skilled plumbing work in the upkeep of County facilities and equipment. It is distinguished from the Building Maintenance Worker series by the latter's regular assignment to perform varied duties relating to the maintenance and repair of County buildings. It is further distinguished from the Park Maintenance Worker class by its emphasis on performing skilled journey-level plumbing, while the latter performs a wide variety of general maintenance and construction tasks.Benefits: The County of Santa Barbara offers generous benefits, click on the Benefits Tab above, or HERE, to view more information. The work schedule for this position will depend on the needs of the department, which may include working on weekends, holidays, evenings, and on-call shifts.
Examples of Duties
- Installs and repairs pipes, fittings, and fixtures.
- Operates and maintains pumps and water treatment systems, hot and cold water systems and similar components, water wells, and irrigation fixtures.
- Maintains and repairs water sprinklers, irrigation systems, sewer lift stations, and water wells.
- Tests completed work and makes necessary adjustments; makes periodic inspections of systems for safe and efficient operation.
- Estimates material, labor, and total costs of repair and installation jobs.
- Makes reports of time and materials required to repair and maintain equipment.
- Maintains records of systems operations.
- May supervise helpers on major installations and repair jobs.
Employment Standards
- One year of experience performing journey level plumbing; OR,
- One year of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Building Maintenance Worker II with Santa Barbara County that included responsibility for skilled plumbing; OR,
- A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Additional Qualifications:
- Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License may be required. Incumbent will be required to travel throughout the County of Santa Barbara.
- Certification on backflow prevention device tester may be required, depending upon the job vacancy.
- May be required to obtain a Class A Driver's License.
- May be required to wear a uniform.
Knowledge of: water and gas installation; maintenance and repair methods, tools, materials and equipment used in plumbing maintenance, repair, and construction work; safety procedures, requirements, and equipment.
Ability to: trace and analyze causes of plumbing, irrigation, water well, and sewer lift station problems and make repairs; read, interpret, and work from blueprints; prepare rough sketches of work and estimates of materials and labor; work cooperatively with others; speak and write clearly.
Some positions may require knowledge of water wells, sewer lift stations, and irrigation systems.
Supplemental Information
APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS:
- Review applications and supplemental questionnaire to determine those applicants who meet the employment standards.
- Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking: Responses to the required supplemental questionnaire will be evaluated and scored. Candidates' final score and rank on the employment list will be determined by their responses to the supplemental questionnaire. This process may be eliminated if there are fewer than 11 qualified candidates.
Candidates must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking examination to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established, all candidates will receive an email notice of their score on the exam(s), rank on the employment list, and exact duration of the employment list. Human Resources will notify you by mail if your name is removed.

Conditional Job Offer: Appointee may be subject to a post-offer medical evaluation or examination. The appointee must satisfactorily complete a one-year probationary period.
The following process is only used for the General Services Department as part of the background investigation process for this position, after the candidate is extended a conditional offer of employment:
- Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ): The selected individual will receive a notice regarding the completion of a Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ). Failure to submit a PHQ by the deadline will result in disqualification from the hiring process for the General Services Department.
- Background Investigation: The selected individual will be required to complete a Personal History Statement (PHS) and undergo an extensive background investigation that includes an evaluation of references, prior employment, drug history, residence history, and neighborhood check. This process may take 4-6 weeks.
- Live Scan: Electronic fingerprint scanning that is certified by the State Department of Justice.
Current or excessive use of drugs, sale of drugs, serious criminal history, or deception relating to employment history may bar employment.
