ABOUT THE POSITION

The Fire Inspector/Plans Examiner is a position within the Marin County Fire Department directly supporting the Prevention Division. 

The position works independently under the general supervision of the Fire Marshal. The primary responsibilities of this position will be conducting plan reviews; interpreting fire codes and ordinances; and performing field inspections related to building, fire and other life safety systems for adherence to initial inspections.

There is currently one (1) full time, regular hire vacancy in the Marin County Fire Department.

ABOUT YOU

They are capable of completing multiple tasks and projects as they are assigned and can effectively make decisions with little to no supervision. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, methods and techniques of fire prevention and investigation.
  • Life safety codes inspection principles, practices and methods.
  • Applicable fire protection laws, ordinances and regulations.
  • Standard and accepted building construction methods and techniques consistent with fire prevention and protection.

Ability to:

  • Interpret and apply the County's fire prevention codes, laws, rules, ordinances and policies.
  • Perform detailed analyses and examinations of building and construction designs, specifications, calculations and plans.
  • Detect and explain deviations from codes and regulations.
  • Make accurate mathematical computations related to simple engineering calculations.
  • Organize work, set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Use sound, independent judgment within regulatory and procedural guidelines.
  • Prepare clear, concise and accurate written reports and correspondence.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with engineers, architects, building contractors, co-workers and the public
  • Operate/navigate computerized databases and records management systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. (This may include construction trade experience, including experience with a C-16 contractor or possession of a C-16 license.)

A typical way to qualify is sufficient fire prevention experience to demonstrate possession of the required knowledge and abilities; equivalent to completion of a certificate program in Fire Technology or Fire Science from an accredited college; and completion of California State Board of Fire Services accredited courses Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D, and Fire Investigation 1A and 1B.

Highly Desired
Completion of an Associate Degree or equivalent in Fire Technology or Fire Science and California State Board of Fire Services accredited courses Fire Training Instructor 1A and 1B, Fire Inspector 2A, 2B, 2C and 2D, and Public Education 1.

Certificates and Licenses
This job class requires travel between various County and business-related locations. Employees who drive on County business to carry out job-related duties must possess a valid California driver's license for the class of vehicle driven and must meet automobile insurability requirements of the County, including review of a recent DMV history. Applicants are required to furnish a recent DMV driving record.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
May be required to work overtime, weekends, on call and holidays; attend meetings and classes; and wear a uniform.
