Job Description:
Apex Systems is looking to add a Chemical/Laboratory Technician to our petroleum-industry client’s team located in Richmond, VA. We are looking to identify qualified candidates to begin the hiring process as early as this week.
Compensation: $20-22/hr (overtime rate of “time and a half” when/if applicable)
Schedule: M-F 8am to 5pm

About the Role
Our client is seeking a motivated and safety-conscious Chemical Technician I to join our Physical Properties Testing team within the R&D Analytical Department in Richmond, VA. This is an exciting entry-level opportunity for someone looking to build a career in chemistry and laboratory science.
In this hands-on laboratory role, you will perform analytical testing of physical properties such as flash point, viscosity, and insoluble materials. You will work under the guidance of experienced chemists and technicians while learning industry-leading best practices and contributing to the development of next-generation fuel and lubricant additives.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate actively in our client’s strong safety culture and maintain full compliance with safety policies and procedures (ISO, company, and industry standards).
- Conduct physical property tests, including flashpoint, viscosity, and insoluble materials, following established laboratory protocols.
- Ensure accurate documentation and quality control within ISO 9001 and/or ISO 17025 standards.
- Use Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and basic computer tools to record and manage test data.
- Work collaboratively with team members and stakeholders across departments to support project goals.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent AND
- Demonstrated interest in science, chemistry, or laboratory work through coursework, training, or hands-on experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate or Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Biology, Chemical Technology, or related scientific field.
- 2+ years of experience working in a chemistry or analytical laboratory environment.
- Familiarity with LIMS or other lab data management systems.
- Customer service or client-facing experience.
Skills and Competencies
- Basic understanding of safe laboratory practices and lab operations.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Ability to follow detailed test procedures with increasing independence.
- Excellent time management and ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills—both verbal and written.
- A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
- Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills with attention to accuracy and detail.
