Position Summary Information
Job Description Summary
The College seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in design and technical theatre, with a specialty in scenic design/technical direction or lighting design/sound design.

Teach Drama classes, which may include theatre design, stage lighting, stagecraft, and technical theatre practicum classes; teaching responsibilities may also include core and foundational classes such as Theatre Appreciation and Film Appreciation. Design scenery and provide scenic technical production support or design lighting and sound and provide lighting and sound production support; additionally, supervise student designers for all Drama productions and creative activities.

Support the work of the Drama Program and Del Mar College including but not limited to: student advising; community and donor engagement and outreach; student recruiting and retention efforts; curriculum development and assessment; committee involvement; and maintaining scene and/or lighting shops, theatre spaces, and equipment.

Demonstrate skill, knowledge, and abilities in the teaching discipline. Teach assigned courses in a variety of times, locations, and modalities in response to the Drama Program's needs. Make continuous efforts to advance the quality of instruction. Develop and use a variety of teaching methods and materials to assist students who have differing educational and experiential backgrounds in meeting the course outcomes. Maintain appropriate professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community.

Required Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to teach design and technical theatre classes.
  • Demonstrated ability to design scenery and provide scenic technical production support or to design lighting/sound and provide lighting and sound production support for a multiple production season.
  • Teaching experience using online platforms such as Canvas.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stake holders including students, student services, faculty, professional staff, and the community.
  • Ability to leverage and effectively utilize technology in teaching and learning for both face-to-face and online instruction, including computers, internet resources, and other appropriate media.
  • Ability to effectively use theatrical production software and equipment.
  • Ability to design scenery or lighting/sound for a multi-production season and effectively execute designs within budget and time limitations and with primarily a student workforce.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Master's degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the discipline.

    Preferred Qualifications
    Master of Fine Arts degree.

    Teaching experience at the college or university level as an instructor of record.

    Job Duties
    INSTRUCTION/TEACHING:
  • Fully engage in the work of the Drama Program, including teaching design, technical theatre, and core and foundational theatre classes.
  • Teach courses in multiple modalities as necessary.
  • Evaluate student progress toward achievement of stated course outcomes.
  • Review, evaluate, recommend, and effectively use student learning materials and equipment.
    Develop curriculum and teach courses for a Drama Program focused on a transfer-level degree and general theatre education and production.
  • Develop student learning outcomes and methods for assessing students' achievement of these outcomes, as well as to ensure consistent reflection and improvement of best teaching practices.
  • Plan course instruction based upon an approved syllabus/outline provided to ensure course content and objectives are met.
  • Provide students with a written and accessible course syllabus that follows Course Syllabus Guidelines and facilitates a clear understanding between Student and Instructor of the content, goals, requirements, expectations, evaluation methods, and schedule of work.
  • Maintain a classroom environment that promotes teaching and learning while addressing any inequities in the classroom or on campus.
  • Use teaching methods and a variety of teaching styles that engage students actively in their own learning, promote development of critical thinking skills, accommodate diverse student learning styles, and encourage students to become lifelong learners.

    DESIGN & TECHNICAL PRODUCTION:
  • Design scenery or lighting/sound and/or supervising student designers for all Drama productions and creative activities; participate in execution of designs; active presence at performances and creative activities.

    PROGRAM & COLLEGE SUPPORT:
  • Active involvement in advising Drama students; student recruiting and retention; community and donor engagement and outreach; Drama Program Review and course assessments; curriculum development; and National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) national accreditation self-studies.
  • Collaborate in department planning, program review, and integration of courses into guided pathways and NAST self-study work.
  • Participate in the self-evaluation process.
  • Maintain professional standards of competence in the discipline and teaching methodology through professional development/engagement activities.
  • Commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and the continuous reflection and development of best teaching practices for student success within the community college system.
  • Commitment to maintain currency in the discipline and related technology appropriate to instruction as it relates to professional responsibilities outside of the classroom through enthusiastic contributions to department, division, and college activities, including a commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Serve on committees.
  • Accept special assignments occasionally.
  • Participate in scheduled institutional activities which include convocation and graduation ceremonies.

    OTHER ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
  • Participate in departmental, divisional, and College meetings.
  • Participate in College-related activities such as registration and selection of faculty.
  • Participate in activities required to maintain program NAST and College accreditation standards.
  • Participate in the College planning process by assisting in the formulation of goals and objectives and budget priorities.
  • Meet professional assignments in accordance with the College calendar.
  • Participate in business and/or community activities that promote the mission of the College.
  • Perform other duties as required by contract, program work, and general institutional needs in a timely manner.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
