We are looking for a new member of our team that has a natural ability to problem-solve, lead, and works well within a team for our Head of Finance position. This position is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of the organization. The position will lead financial strategy, planning, reporting, and compliance to ensure the organization's long-term sustainability and mission impact. This role requires a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of nonprofit financial management, including grants, donor restrictions, and regulatory compliance.

You're able to see the big picture and think strategically, while making sure the day to day is still performing at optimal levels. You are goal oriented with a proven fundraising track record. You are game to jump in and help whenever and however needed, even if it's an undesirable task. When fires break out, everybody grabs a bucket, from the dogs (yes, we are a dog friendly office!) to our President!

Primary Responsibilities

Financial Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the organization's mission and goals.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the President & CEO and Board of Directors on financial matters. Offering insight and alternative solutions to achieve organizational goals.
  • Lead annual budgeting and long-term financial planning processes.
  • Updates and continually improves Five-Year Economic Model; analyzes internal and external trends, and advises and makes recommendations to achieve organizational financial goals.

Financial Operations & Oversight

  • Oversee accounting, budgeting, cash flow, investments, and financial reporting.
  • Manage banking and investment relationships.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, and annual financial statements.
  • Monitor financial performance and proactively address variances.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with national JA organization, GAAP, IRS regulations, and all applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Manage annual audits and coordinate with external auditors.
  • Maintain internal controls and risk management policies.
  • Leads the Finance and Audit Committee. Prepares financial data and presents information at board meetings and works directly with the Board Treasurer.

Grants & Fund Management

  • Oversee financial aspects of grant management, including budgeting, reporting, and compliance with funder requirements.
  • Track and report on restricted and unrestricted funds.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Supervise and develop finance and accounting staff.
  • Foster a culture of transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (Master's or CPA preferred).
  • Minimum 7-10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards, fund accounting, and grant compliance.
  • Proficiency in financial software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar).
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the organization.

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience working with a Board of Directors and Finance Committee.
  • Familiarity with donor reporting and fundraising operations.
  • Ability to translate complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
