  • Standard business hours (8:00am-4:30pm), may vary based on business need

Responsibilities

The Graduate Engineer will assist in performing technical engineering design and inspection in areas including utilities, stormwater, roadway and ADA and will apply the principles and practices of civil engineering to public works tasks. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:

  • Provides support to the division as it relates to infrastructure improvement projects including utility, water quality, transportation and environmental projects; reviews plans and specifications and verifies as-built drawings of City infrastructure; Provides site inspections, develops cost estimates, works with consultants and contractors as well as the public and stakeholders on projects.
  • Assists in engineering review of proposals for private land development; assists with observing the developer-installed public improvement projects for conformance with engineering plans and specifications and construction safety standards; reviews and files as-built record plans for developer-installed public and private infrastructure.
  • Assists with Municipal State Aid system reporting and tracking, council agenda item preparation, bidding assistance, and various engineering and financial reports.
  • Assists with asset and records management using GPS survey and the Citys records management system and mapping.
  • Gathers information for long-term planning and budgeting to assist with and support Capital Improvement Projects.
  • Assists with development of engineering drawings, construction plans and maps utilizing AutoCAD, ArcMap, and other related computer applications to assist the division and other departments.
  • Responds to requests from the public for information related to grading and drainage, public improvement projects and other related issues.

While these areas are the primary focus of this position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited college or university is required. A minimum of one year of work experience is preferred. Experience utilizing computer technology is required. Ability to operate within AutoCAD system is preferred. Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is preferred. MnDOT certifications and SWPPP Certification are preferred.
  • Most work involves a normal office environment. However, several outdoor activities occur where you are exposed to traffic, construction and grading equipment, noise, dust, weather, etc. where safety equipment is required. Physical efforts include mobility around an office environment, outdoor activities such as observing and navigating on, around and through public and private infrastructure (streets, utilities, buildings, etc.), meeting with property owners, and visiting construction sites, grading sites, and various environmental areas. The position requires an ability to operate survey/outdoor equipment. Mental efforts include the ability to balance and prioritize multiple projects and initiatives with frequent work interruptions or changes in priorities.
  • Candidates must successfully complete and pass the Citys evaluation of the pre-employment process prior to their first day of employment. Pre-employment processes for this position include professional reference checks, background check, drivers check (must have valid drivers license and excellent driving record), work verification and education verification.
