About us

National Grid is hiring a Engineer for our Gas Transmission Engineering and Design Group in Melville, NY.

Job Purpose

Responsible for the engineering, design, and technical oversight during construction of projects relating to the gas transmission and distribution networks located in NYC (Staten Island, Brooklyn & Queens) as well as Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk County).

Key Accountabilities

  • Perform engineering and design for natural gas construction projects which may include distribution/transmission pipelines, bridge/highway/waterway crossings, remote operated valve installations, check valve installations and metering facilities.
  • Plans and conducts work requiring judgement in the evaluation, selection, adaptation or modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Ability to interpret and adapt relevant international and national industry practices, codes and standards as it relates to the Natural Gas system.
  • Provides insight and input on opportunities for enhancing standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Identify, specify, review, and approve materials to be used in association with gas construction projects.
  • Identify and acquire the necessary permits, licenses, and land rights associated with the project.

  • Collaborate with Gas Operations, Gas Asset Owners and Gas Engineering in development of procedures to support the engineering and design of gas facilities in accordance with company and regulatory requirements including all safety, health and environmental standards and procedures.
  • Compile and review as built documentation for accuracy and incorporation into mapping and document management systems. Assist in the Traceable, Verifiable, Complete (TVC) process with the asset owners as part of project record retention.
  • Participate and/or lead inter-regional projects activities. This may require travel outside of assigned service territories.
  • Potential for cross collaboration with the Civil team performing drafting and design work for SWPPP, MPT and Civil Site Plans
  • Participate in Storm restoration activities or other system emergencies as called upon.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in an Engineering discipline (mechanical or civil preferred) is required. 1-3 years of engineering, design or project management experience.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam is preferred. Engineer in Training (EIT) certification is preferred.
  • Commitment to Safety as a core value.
  • Basic understanding of the application of design and construction standards, engineering drawings, and underground construction methods and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of OSHA, PHMSA, and applicable State regulations.
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple projects within budget and time constraints
  • Demonstration of a high level of personal initiative and ability to interact with a diverse group of company personnel, contractors, regulatory representatives, and town/city officials in a positive collaborative manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively both internally and externally to the organization.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with safe driving history.

Capabilities

  • Promotes team effectiveness by soliciting input from team members,
  • Actively builds and maintains a network of relationships across functions, with peers in other organizations within the industry and with the regulators and utilizes these contacts to keep abreast of best practice and build mutual trust.
  • Develop project bid specifications and assist in the procurement of engineering and/or and construction services.
  • Manage external engineering design firms, contracted to support projects, to ensure all work is performed in accordance with company standards, within budget and on schedule.
  • Work with the engineering design project team to develop and manage all engineering aspects of a project, up to and including project closeout and compilation of as-built documentation.
  • Effectively communicate project information with involved internal and external stake holders.
  • Implement change control procedures as necessary to track design changes initiated by engineering or field operations and identify any associated risks that may result. Document any requests to deviate from approved/agreed to parameters and seek authorization where required.

Downstate NY Salary: $111,000 - $130,000 a year

Please be advised that due to the nature of this position, incumbents are subject to federal Drug & Alcohol safety regulations governing US Department of Transportation ("DOT") covered positions, including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA). As such, the Company's testing programs and policies regarding the use of federally prohibited drugs or alcohol, for recreational or medical purposes, will remain in effect for these safety-sensitive, DOT covered positions.
