The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is one of the finest museums on the West Coast and is celebrated for the superb quality of its permanent collection. Its mission is to integrate art into the lives of people through internationally recognized exhibitions and special programs, as well as the thoughtful presentation of its permanent collection.

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is looking for a new Director of Communications and Marketing (DCM) who is creative, collaborative, and forward-thinking to provide strategic leadership, bringing broad professional expertise and skills in branding, communications, marketing, social media, design, digital engagement and audience development. Reporting directly to the Museum Director and CEO, and working closely with senior leadership, the DCM will conceive of and implement energetic and innovative marketing and communications strategies that effectively attract and retain a diverse and large audience for the museum, its exhibitions, public programming and educational activities. The DCM also oversees Visitor Experience and the Museum Shop, and manages a Communications and Social Media Manager and a Manager of Visitor Experience and Museum Shop.

The DCM will include approaches outside of the box of conventional cultural marketing, reaching across digital and traditional platforms, and ultimately continue to establish an exciting and enduring local, regional and national identity for the museum as a welcoming, inclusive, and premier cultural destination. Over the next year, the planned exhibitions range from contemporary - Los Angeles artist Elliott Hundley: Proscenium and Iraqi artist Vian Sora: Outer Worlds- to 19th Century French art of Impressionist Revolution: Monet to Matisse from the Dallas Museum of Art and a companion exhibition Encore drawn from the SBMA collection, both opening this October.

Required: A Bachelor of Arts preferably in the humanities, marketing, journalism, communications, or a related field. Five to seven years of experience in the field of communications, marketing and development, preferably in a management capacity. Background in art and/or previous museum experience desirable as is a general interest in the history of art. Attention to detail a must, as well as the ability to multitask as a team player and interact effectively with various Co-workers, Board Members, Vendors, Members, and Visitors.

Reports to the Eichholz Foundation Director
Schedule is full time, 40 hours/week, exempt status.
Compensation: Range from 100K to 125K
Full Time Status provides competitive and comprehensive benefits including eligibility for medical, dental, vision, pre-tax savings, long term disability, life insurance plans, and more. Accrued vacation up to 15 days in first two years of service and increases thereafter, 64 hours of paid sick leave reissued annually, and 13 paid holidays (14 on Federal election years). 403b eligibility with a Museum match up to 5% of your earnings after a year of service, SB BikeSpot membership, and working in beautiful downtown Santa Barbara.
Valid driver's license is required and some driving for off-site events.
Successful Background Check is required and proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
