Primary Responsibility

The Desktop Operations Engineer is a forward-thinking IT professional responsible for ensuring optimal desktop computing infrastructure and endpoint operations across our computing environment. Under the supervision of the Director of Technical Support Services, this role not only covers traditional desktop support but also integrates modern endpoint management practices including cloud and mobile device management (MDM), application management, IT security fundamentals, and server-level administration.

The successful candidate will be proficient in managing environments that leverage tools such as Microsoft Endpoint Manager/Intune, Autopilot, Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, Jamf Pro for Apple device management, Active Directory, and Entra ID/Azure. They will work collaboratively with IT peers, technicians, and clients to ensure that computer images, computer deployments, software deployments, and system customizations meet the highest standards of reliability, scalability, and security in line with industry best practices and IT departmental policy.

Pre-requisites for Position (Qualifications Standards)

Education and Experience sufficient to meet the rigors of the position. Examples may include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in computer science or related IT field with five years of relevant work experience; or equivalent education and experience that will provide the necessary knowledge, skill and abilities to perform the functions of the position.

Desirable certifications/experience include CompTIA A+, CompTIA Net+, CompTIA Security+, CompTIA Project+, Microsoft Intune Administrator Associate, Microsoft 365 Certified: Endpoint Administrator Associate, M365 Administrator: SharePoint and OneDrive data administration, Apple Certified Support Professional, Jamf 100/200.

Special Skills or Abilities related to position

  • Experience managing Windows, macOS, and mobile device environments for an organization with at least 500 Windows devices

  • Experience managing devices, applications, software updates and patch management with MECM, MEM/Intune, Jamf Pro, Active Directory, and Entra ID

  • Experience with Windows server administration for file server, printer server, Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager servers

  • Data storage management on file servers and cloud servers

  • Experience implementing and monitoring security for computer environments and data storage

  • Experience working with and leading project teams

  • Ability to work effectively as a team member

  • Ability to research, develop, and strategize for computing technology improvements

  • Ability to lead IT projects and document solutions

  • Capacity to follow directions and give attention to detail

  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Ability to meet deadlines and goals

  • Ability to supervise part-time employees and work-study students

Hiring range = $89,532.59 - $99,480.65 annual salary depending upon a combination of education and experience. Benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Pet insurance, retirement contribution, tuition reimbursement, annual & sick time, mental health resources, healthy lifestyle benefits, affordable transitional housing may be available to the successful candidate based on eligibility and availability, relocation if applicable. CMC utilizes a wage progression compensation model that accounts for a candidate’s skill and experience. Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.

Minimum Qualifications:

Essential Duties

  • User and Site Technology Support: Provide front-line service and support to ensure quick resolution of technology incidents and maintain a high level of knowledge and professionalism.

  • Device and Systems Administration: Perform ongoing administration and maintenance of technology hardware, software, and IT systems, ensuring optimal performance and security, managing the device lifecycle, and maintaining asset inventory. This includes administration, management, and implementation of device and application management systems including MECM, MEM, Entra ID, and others to maintain a secure and operational state of device hardware, operating systems, applications, configurations, deployments, and updates.

  • File Storage Administration: Administer data recovery operations, server storage, and cloud storage for organizational file data.

  • Documentation and Training: Develop and maintain documentation and provide training to personnel on the use of technology and IT systems.

  • Customer Service: Deliver consistent, quality customer service and promote the IT department's image and services.

  • Leadership: Provide direction and mentorship to team members and lead various IT projects and support efforts.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received

This position reports to the Director of Technical Support Services.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position may supervise part-time staff and student workers.

Special Conditions of Employment

Successful completion of a background check including motor vehicles records report will be required. Incumbents in this position will adhere to all safety and compliance policies of Colorado Mountain College while performing all duties assigned. Travel, evenings and weekends may be required at times.

Working Conditions 

This position requires constant sitting, occasional walking, standing and driving; occasional handling objects, pushing/pulling; frequent reaching with hands/arms, and use of finger movements; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects up to 50 lbs.  Constant written and oral communication and the ability to reason and analyze and perform calculations occasionally. Work is performed using a computer and standard office equipment daily and driving a vehicle occasionally.
