This position helps REI succeed by increasing productivity and lowering risk and costs through good health program management. This position will work with health and third-party administrators to create and use best practices in operations. These include claims management and health and care management protocols. The position also serves as a resource to management, HR, and employees on many healthcare issues for both union and nonunion employees. This role acts as an escalation contact for complex vendor and employee service issues from the Employee Services team. Models and acts in line with REI’s guiding values and mission.


Responsibilities and Qualifications

  • Demonstrates leadership by building effective partnerships across departments within REI. Develops and maintains programs to promote a safe and healthy workplace.
  • Contributes to and manages analyses, assessments, and designs of company programs. These programs include health, welfare, life and disability insurance, leave, time off, and reward or recognition plans.
  • Functions as an internal consultant to supervisors and managers. Advises on best practices and process improvement in benefits administration, absence management, and related health and welfare programs.
  • Educate, coach, and partner with management and HR Business Partners. Implement solutions for complex claims, including return-to-work issues. Ensure consistent business practices.
  • Monitor and routinely report benchmarking metrics for all programs. Identify areas of concern. Develop strategic recommendations to control costs. Maintain or improve the quality of care and level of services for employees.
  • Provides oversight of health and welfare policy compliance. Assures consistent policy application and program limitations. Works closely with the HR management team to ensure REI programs are followed properly and consistently across the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with all labor laws and REI policies. Act as a liaison with internal Legal counsel for complex claims. Constantly search for ways to reduce or eliminate risk exposure, both operationally and legally.
  • Partner closely with Benefits, HR Employee Services, and Operations teams. Provide recommendations about program administration, design changes, vendor management, service agreements, and employee or management communications.
  • May act as a project manager to manage various projects and process improvement initiatives leading to improved efficiencies.

Required Qualifications

  • Over 5 years of experience administering, designing, developing, and deploying company-wide or multi-business line employer health plans. Experience includes group health, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability, life, and flexible spending plans. Also experienced in rewards plans and programs to attract, retain, and engage management and employees.
  • Over 5 years of experience using analytic and statistical techniques to assess program cost drivers. Performed trend analysis and cost forecasting for benefits or reward programs’ operations, effectiveness, and improvement.
  • Advanced capability in using data analysis, data management and reporting tools including Excel, PowerPoint, and HRIS report writing tools.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of regulations affecting health and welfare benefit plans, including COBRA, ADA, HIPAA, ACA, Section 125, CAA, Medicare, DOL, and ERISA.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience administration, implementation and communication with union health plans.
