Agency Description

The Philadelphia Department of Prisons (PDP) provides a secure correctional environment to detained people accused or convicted of illegal acts.  The PDP operates four facilities to prepare incarcerated people for successful re-entry after their release. We also offer the following programs and services:

  • Job training
  • Educational services
  • Parenting classes
  • Substance abuse services
  • Behavioral health therapy
  • Counseling, individual and group therapy

Job Description

This is correctional Social Services work at the Assistant Deputy Commissioner level, directing and coordinating programs for Education and Transition within the Prison system.  Directs, through subordinate supervisors, social service programs designed to provide services for incarcerated individuals.  These programs support correctional education and the transition to educational programs up to discharge.

The work is performed under the direction of the Deputy Commissioner of Restorative and Transitional Services.

Essential Functions

  • The Assistant Deputy Commissioner develops recommendations to modify and establish departmental goals, objectives, and policies for Education and Transition.
  • Ensures the development of a plan supporting correctional education and therapeutic programs and the transition to educational programs upon discharge.
  • Confers with subordinate supervisors and managers about educational activities and programs that conform to State and Local rules, regulations, and mandates.
  • Plans, develops and measures the effectiveness of the educational programs to ensure that programs are aligned with daily Prison operations. 
  • Develop performance measures and collect data to track program success.
  • Works in collaboration with City, State, Federal, and Community program providers.

  • Excellent management and leadership ability.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organized with attention to detail.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree is preferred in criminal justice, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology, Social Work, Education, or a related field.
  • Ten to Fifteen years of experience in Social Services, Job Development, Counseling, and Treatment at Local, State, or Federal agencies.
  •  Military experience is acceptable.

Salary Range: $147,000 - $154,000
