The Assistant Dean of Philanthropy will be a proven advancement leader and fundraiser who reports directly to the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Associate Vice Chancellor, University Development in University Advancement. The Assistant Dean is the colleges chief fundraising and engagement leader and will be responsible for managing the college advancement team and working closely with the Dean on strategic relationships and vision for Advancement. This position will build strong and mutually beneficial relationships between academic leadership, faculty, staff, donors, prospects, alumni, business and community leaders.
The incumbent will work closely with University Advancement and the Dean in the areas of program growth, organizational alignment, and program effectiveness; closely collaborating in the areas of recruitment and retention, performance management and assessment, and professional development. The Assistant Dean also partners with the Principal Gifts team in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement to cultivate and plan for the largest gifts to the college and/or the university.
The Assistant Dean will lead and administer a team of nearly 30 professionals that includes managers, gift officers, engagement and communications staff, and other advancement related administrative functions. The Advancement team works in close partnership with the multiple foundations and advisory boards including the NC Agricultural Foundation, Inc., NC Cooperative Extension Agricultural Programs, NC Agricultural and Life Sciences Research Foundation, JC Raulston Arboretum Advisory Board, Agricultural Institute Advisory Board and others that support a variety of research and serve multiple constituencies.
The Assistant Dean also serves as the President of The NC Agricultural Foundation, Inc. and will actively manage a focused portfolio of major and principal gift prospects and donors by guiding their cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
Duties of the successful incumbent for this role include, but are not limited to:
- In partnership with the Dean and the Associate Vice Chancellor, University Development, coordinate the complete range of philanthropic activities related to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) including planning, managing and implementing annual fundraising strategies, operating plans and budgets designed to attain the philanthropic goals and objectives of the College and the foundation.
- Lead all aspects of the fundraising process that will maximize the Colleges capacity and outcomes including preparation and implementation of annual fundraising goals and a comprehensive major gifts program that generates individual and corporate donors and other philanthropic support.
- Oversee initiatives to identify, qualify, prioritize, cultivate, solicit, recognize, and steward donors and prospects as well as collaborate with and support the Dean, department heads, faculty and volunteers in their related fundraising efforts.
- Build working relationships with academic department heads, faculty, and administrators throughout the College to thoroughly understand their programs and priorities and to both assist in managing their respective advancement activities and represent their needs.
- Lead and manage a team of advancement professionals, set policy, procedures, and best practices; provide inspirational leadership, mentorship and coaching to achieve annual goals while adhering to university performance standards.
- Model and reinforce a sophisticated, non-territorial approach to donor-centric philanthropy that encourages teamwork, flexibility, and responsiveness.
- Monitor progress against goals and share reports on progress with the Dean and Associate Vice Chancellor, University Development.
- Manage a focused portfolio of major gift and principal gift prospects and donors.
- Collaborate and consult with the Dean and the Associate Vice Chancellor, University Development for coordination of resources and services.
- Willingness/ability to travel frequently and participate in occasional evening and weekend activities; perform other relevant duties as assigned.
- Serves as the President and provides management and oversight of the NC Agricultural Foundation, Inc. board of directors.
- Provide effective fiscal management of the NC Agricultural Foundation, Inc. andCALSAdvancement budgets.
