Job Summary

Communicate vision of patient financial advocacy to supervisors, staff, and others who impact the patient financial experience. Develop department goals, initiatives, KPI's, management reports, and scorecards that align with the ideal patient financial experience.

Manage progress toward established goals, adjusting priorities and strategies as needed. Employ Lean methodology to standardize work, surface problems, find efficiencies, eliminate waste, and develop problem-solving skills of supervisors and staff. Evaluate and implement new technology. Report out to Pre-Service and Revenue Cycle leadership monthly.

Develop management skills of supervisor, business analyst, and training specialist direct reports by coaching and delegating while managing risk and ensuring accountability for delegated items. 

Cultivate mutually beneficial relationships across the continuum of Revenue Cycle including clinics, payers, billing, coding, care management, and other Revenue Cycle departments.

Serve on Revenue Cycle projects and committees as needed.

Responsibilities*

  • Manage operations of the Registration Contact Center, PBS Help Desk, and Registration Denials units, meeting or exceeding industry benchmarks for customer satisfaction, service level, productivity and accuracy.
  • Manage operations of Emergency Department Registration, meeting or exceeding the industry benchmark for completed registrations. Ensure compliance with mandatory admissions documents such as the General Treatment Consent and Medicare Notice of Discharge.
  • Serve as business owner of the real-time eligibility process, EDI vendor and related technology.
  • Along with Director, serve as business owner of the registration module of the electronic health record system.
  • Exercise responsibility, directly or indirectly, over 77 subordinates including 3 supervisors, 3 team leads, 2 business analysts, and 1 training specialist. Oversee human resource management of department (hiring, promotion, salary changes, performance coaching, disciplinary actions, training and development) ensuring consistent application of organizational policies.

    This position reports to an Administrative Director within the Revenue Cycle Pre-Service Division.

    SUPERVISION EXCERCISED

    Administrative supervision is exercised over 3 supervisors, 3 team leads, 2 business analysts, 1 training specialist, and 68 staff. 

    Required Qualifications*

    A Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary. Experience managing staff activities and managing by use of data is necessary. Demonstrated leadership abilities and a positive attitude are required. Strong mentoring and coaching skills are required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary. Demonstrated ability to perform in a team environment is necessary. Experience in a customer service environment is required.

    Desired Qualifications*

    Experience in accounts receivable and billing is desired. Experience with and understanding of Michigan Medicine multiple business systems is desired. Knowledge of the processes impacting Revenue Cycle is desired. Experience using Lean methodology is desired.

    Modes of Work

    Background Screening

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
