Department: Genetic Counselor Service - 388

Primary Purpose:

The laboratory genetic counselor will support ARUP’s cytogenetic testing.
Provide genetic consultation services to clients and health care providers regarding constitutional cytogenetic tests. Provide genetic counseling support for the cytogenetics, maternal serum screening (MSS) and non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) sub-specialty laboratory areas of ARUP. Monitor activity of cytogenetic testing and develop documents about ARUP’s cytogenetic testing services. Serve as a resource to multiple work units/departments within ARUP. Provide education about genetic diseases.

Essential Functions:

Provide telephone consultation to clients and referring health care providers about genetic testing provided by ARUP.

Coordinate appropriate use, priority of use, and interpretation of genetic/genomic tests and any ancillary testing used for patient management.

Provide contact information for patient resources, as requested by health care providers.

Assist medical directors with interpreting complex genetic/genomic test results which may include obtaining clinical information, previous laboratory results and/or samples from family members, and literature review. Assist with report review to provide appropriate recommendations and comprehensive, detailed, and accurate clinical reports. 

Participate in projects and research activities involving genetic/genomic disease to support ARUP and for publication/presentation, in compliance with IRB protocols. 

Collaborate on intra- departmental projects where genetic counseling expertise is needed. 

Develop test-specific information for client and patient education and informed consent documents.

Develop marketing materials and provide content for the ARUP website.

Work with the genetic counseling team to keep all published genetic/genomic testing information current.

Provide education about genetic diseases, testing options, and the role of genetic counselors in a laboratory to clients, health care providers, students, and ARUP employees.

Participate in student education in genetics and assist training new genetic counselors.

Participate in education and teambuilding activities with members of the department. 

Collaborate on activities related to new genetic/genomic test development.

Assist in training new genetic counselors. Monitor and communicate changes in federal and state regulations and national organization (e.g., ACMG, ACOG, NSGC) guidelines, policy, and position statements.

Observe principles of data security and patient confidentiality.  

Maintain ethical standards in the performance of duties with patients, co-workers and other health care professionals.

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction

Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Communicate: Frequently communicate with others; ability to communicate effectively by phone

PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies 

ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects

Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling

Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance

Color Vision: Perception of and ability to distinguish colors

Continuing Education: Continual assessment of current literature and best practices

Qualifications

Education

Required

Master's Degree or better in Genetic Counseling.

 

Experience

Required

Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling or equivalent State of Utah Genetic Counseling License American Board of Genetic Counseling Certification OR American Board of Medical Genetics Certification in Genetic Counseling – (CGC)

Preferred

Five (5) years of experience as a genetic counselor or three (3) years of experience as an ARUP genetic counselor Experience as a genetic counselor in a clinical or laboratory setting
